Difference among CV, Resume and Bio-Data
(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F1.bp.blogspot.com%2F-mMvXh2BErnQ%2FTa1pfWQ9shI%2FAAAAAAAAAtY%2FCGJQXYGiRKk%2Fs1600%2FDifference%2Bamong%2BCV%2BResume%2Band%2BBio-Data.jpg&hash=d22358e821acdc5ad1ad59c5b2589cb3f69304fe)
People use the words RESUME, C.V., and BIO-DATA interchangeably for the document highlighting skills, education, and experience that a candidate submits when applying for a job. On the surface level, all the three mean the same.
 However, there are intricate differences.

RESUME
Resume Is a French word meaning "summary", and true to the word meaning, signifies a summary of one's employment, education, and other skills, used in applying for a new position.
A resume seldom exceeds one side of an A4 sheet, and at the most two sides.
They do not list out all the education and qualifications, but only highlight specific skills customized to target the job profile in question.

A resume is usually broken into bullets and written in the third person to appear objective and formal.
A good resume starts with a brief Summary of Qualifications, followed by Areas of Strength or Industry Expertise in keywords, followed by Professional Experience in reverse chronological order.
Focus is on the most recent experiences, and prior experiences summarized.
The content aims at providing the reader a balance of  esponsibilities and accomplishments for each position.
After Work experience come Professional Affiliations, Computer Skills, and Education.

C.V CURRICULUM VITAE
C.V Is a Latin word meaning "course of life". Curriculum Vitae (C.V.) is therefore a regular or particular course of study pertaining to education and life.
A C.V. is more detailed than a resume, usually 2 to 3 pages, but can run even longer as per the requirement.
A C.V. generally lists out every skills, jobs, degrees, and professional affiliations the applicant has acquired, usually in chronological order.

BIO-DATA
Bio Data the short form for Biographical Data, is the old-fashioned terminology for Resume or C.V.
The emphasis in a bio data is on personal particulars like date of birth, religion, sex, race, nationality, residence, martial status, and the like.
Next comes a chronological listing of education and experience.
The things normally found in a resume, that is specific skills for the job in question comes last, and are seldom included. Bio-data also includes applications made in specified formats as required by the company.
A C.V. displays general talent rather than specific skills for any specific positions.

A resume is ideally suited when applying for middle and senior level positions, where experience and specific skills rather than education is important.
A C.V., on the other hand is the preferred option for fresh graduates, people looking for a career change, and those applying for academic positions.
The term bio-data is mostly used in India while applying to government jobs, or when applying for research grants and other situations where one has to submit descriptive essays.

Resumes present a summary of highlights and allow the prospective employer to scan through the document visually or electronically, to see if your skills match their available positions.
A good resume can do that very effectively, while a C.V. cannot.
A bio-data could still perform this role, especially if the format happens to be the one recommended by the employer.

Personal information such as age, sex, religion and others, and hobbies are never mentioned in a resume.
Many people include such particulars in the C.V.
However, this is neither required nor considered in the US market.
A Bio-data, on the other hand always include such personal particulars.

Using the wrong words in your CV might deter a recruiter from selecting you, no matter how qualified you are. Wrong or negative words and phrases in your CV lead to misunderstanding in the mind of the recruiter.

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F3.bp.blogspot.com%2F-Nj5aWIw4yFI%2FTs7BwnpK84I%2FAAAAAAAAFPU%2FuFR94RoI4CY%2Fs400%2FresumeLogo_thumb.jpg&hash=729b660126a892bfb78c40dd617803bb1d22eeb0)

1) Responsible

Saying that you were ‘responsible’ for something will not get you the recruiter’s attention. The employer is more concerned with how you used this responsibility to contribute to organizational goals. The recruiter wants to see the effort you put in and the final outcome. Mentioning your achievements will add weight to your CV.

2) Fail

The word ‘fail’ is perhaps the most negative word that you can put in your CV. Your CV must be about your achievements, not your shortcomings. Discuss such issues only if asked.

3) Expressing Dislike For Your Boss

Do not rant about your ex-boss. The recruiter may view this as something you might say about him too when you leave his company. It’s a small world and the person interviewing you might even know your ex-boss.

4) Lay Off

Lay offs have hit all sectors and is a common phenomenon across industries. The current market situation has forced employers to lay-off several employees, especially at junior levels. Lay-offs are not always because of incompetency or failure of the employee. There is no need to mention that you have been laid off on your CV. If the interviewer asks you about your reason for leaving, then you can mention it.

Do not write about your health problems on your CV, no matter how minor they may seem. If your CV shows that there is a break in your career due to some health issues, let the interviewer ask you about it and only then discuss it.

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F2.bp.blogspot.com%2F-tboGerNP1Gg%2FTi4f85g4IWI%2FAAAAAAAABsw%2FIb5eDbqvJmc%2Fs1600%2Fresume_2.jpg&hash=b3ccaaba936c3f75447ee7fa42c5d6f6ae94436f)

Here are some tips which should include in particular section.

  • Contact Information
In this section you should include your name , Address including street and house number and your contact number.
  • Career/Job Objective
This is recommended only for recent graduates or entry level personnel. Experience and professional job seekers rarely include it. This component of the resume can be very challenging to write. The purpose of the objective statement is to inform the reader of your career goals and qualifications. The statement should be written specifically enough to let the reader know that you have a focus to your job search. If you are considering a variety of objectives, you may want to relay the relevant objective in an accompanying cover letter.
  • Educational Qualifications
This section is most effective when you have experiences from your education that are impressive and/or directly relate to your objective. Adding this section is useful when you have developed skills and specific knowledge through your education rather than work experience. This section can be used to highlight coursework, research, or special knowledge that complements your objective. This information is useful in a resume of entry level candidates and recent graduates.
  • Employment or Experience Summary
A brief summary of qualifications can condense an extensive background by emphasizing experiences and accomplishments in brief phrases. The qualifications summary is accomplishment-oriented and provides an overview of your work experience. A summary is most appropriated for someone with substantial experience, for someone who is changing careers and wants to demonstrate transferable skills, or for someone with an eclectic background.
  • Professional Activities and Accomplishments
This part of your resume offers you the opportunity to provide insight into your career development. You should be selective and complete, listing such items as memberships in professional associations and offices held, professional registrations, honors received, and major articles or publications you have written. Do not list every article or every speech you may have given or every conference you have attended. Emphasize quality - this section of the resume should help you to demonstrate you are current and active in your profession.
  • Miscellaneous
This section covers the remaining things like hobbies, interests , strengths and goals etc.

These are the main tips which we must concentrate on.

In the current situation, it is very necessary for people to know the mistakes than can cost them end interview call.

A cluttered CV

CVs where people simply put all possible information and expect recruiters to scroll through them to find out relevant details.
The only destiny these CVs have is getting the 'delete' key pressed and landing up in the trash bins.

HR people get hundreds of applications for a single position.
They don't have the time to sift through your CV and see if each candidate suits their purpose.
So, it is your job to make your CV as user-friendly, so that they can find the information they are looking for in a single glance.

Grammatical and spelling mistakes

Grammatical errors and spelling mistakes not only look shabby, but they reveal a lot about one's attitude.
If a HR manager receives a business proposal with grammar and spelling mistakes, the first thing he would think is, "Is this person really serious about the business?"

Similarly, a CV with grammatical errors and spelling mistakes will suggest that he does not care enough for this opportunity, you are lazy and you do not have an eye for detail.
Nobody wants to hire an employee with any of these characteristics.
So it's a given that such CVs are headed to the rejected pile.

Past failures and/or health problems

Your CV is not the place for you to talk about past failures or health problems, so keep them off paper.
Some people may argue that almost everybody has the sense not to write about failures and health problems on CVs and while I agree with them, it's been known to happen.

So this pointer is for those who do commit this mistake.
Take a look at your CV again and if you have addressed any of these problems directly or indirectly, it is wise to edit them out.

Current or expected CTC

Many people have developed the habit of writing about their current salary or expected salary on a CV, as they assume that all prospective employers are going to ask about it, or that most job notifications require it.
It is advised not to mention it on the CV, unless specifically asked to do so.

Vague/unclear contact details

Picture this situation --
you have a menu card from a nearby restaurant in front of you.
You like the dishes they serve and the price is right too.
You are impressed by the fact that they deliver within 10 minutes.
You pick up the phone to make a call, but are not able to find the telephone number on the menu card.
You look a second time, but you are still not able to find it.
You're hungry and there's another menu card from another restaurant right in front of you, which looks equally good.

What will you do? Won't you immediately place an order with the restaurant that offers a number and ask them to send the food ASAP?
Later, you may realise that there was a phone number on the first menu card, hidden somewhere in a corner, but the opportunity is gone now.
You may land up in a similar situation if your contact details are not clear or not easy to find for employers.
Some other things to note here are:

- Provide a phone number where potential employers can talk to you directly and don't have to go through your parents or friends.

- Keep the e-mail addresses formal = mostly a combination of your first and last name.

- Keep the e-mail address small and uncomplicated to avoid any typing mistakes if employers decide to contact you online.

Writing a CV is not a difficult task. The best person to do it is you. The only thing you need is to analyse your candidature properly and present it well. You will need to draft and re-draft your CV many times before you are finally happy with it.

Ways of Putting your CV online...

In a technology-enabled world, even your resume has to be tailored to find a good job.
Most companies prefer receiving job applications via e-mail, as it is convenient, simple and also environment-friendly.

While traditional techniques like sending a properly formatted, professionally written and eye-catching resume printed out from a computer remains relevant, a Web-based format will enhance your possibilities of finding a good job.
This format refers to your approach to resume-preparation based on how you want it to be delivered to the recipient.

Few formats you must consider:

Text-based CV (also known as ASCII)

A simple version that can be pasted directly into the body of an e-mail.
ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) is a code for representing English characters as numbers, with each letter assigned a number from 0 to 127.
The format is simplistic and the focus has to be on content.
Most computers use ASCII codes to represent text, which makes it possible to transfer data from one computer to another.

As this is a text-based resume, try not to make it flashy.
The resume should be readable and any computer system can read a file in this format.
The downside is its universal acceptance limits your ability to use graphics and special fonts like italics, etc.

Tip:
This format is best suited for non-creative jobs like manufacturing, operations, engineering, technical support, etc.

Ways of Putting your CV online...

Few formats you must consider:

Scan-able CV

This kind of a resume can be run through a scanner that has character recognition capabilities.
The employer can store your resume in their database and search it using key words for any future openings.

Put your name at the top of each page if your resume exceeds one page.
Use industry or job-specific keywords so your resume is easily searchable within the database.
Some keywords, for instance, could be 'market research', 'sales consultant', 'project manager', 'result oriented', etc.
Avoid any graphics or images in this kind of a resume, as it may make scanning difficult.

Tip:
This format works best when applying for jobs directly on the company's portal.
Your resume gets stored in the company's database, so ease of search must be given the highest priority.

Ways of Putting your CV online...

Few formats you must consider:

Personal Resume Web site

A very convenient way of sharing (and showing off) your skills, accomplishments and abilities is by creating a personal resume Web site.
This doesn't need to be a very complicated site, but it should display your work favourably.
It can include articles you have written, artwork and photography you have created, or software you have developed.
You can even provide links to reports, papers, studies, brochures, projects, presentations, testimonials, letters of recommendations, any kudos you have received -- from customers, clients, colleagues, past employers, professors, etc.
The biggest advantage is having your resume available 24/7 to all potential employers.

A number of sites host Web pages. To find some, try Free Web Space.

Tip:
This format is best suited for creative professionals like Web site designers, animation and design professionals, etc.

Ways of Putting your CV online...

Few formats you must consider:

CD Portfolio

A digital copy of your portfolio can easily be burnt on to a CD that can be used in the CD-ROM drive of a potential employer.
A CD can easily fit into your briefcase or bag and you will have a resume that will be on the move with you.
Moreover, you will not have to struggle with carrying around a tremendous, oversized binder, or a huge case filled with your samples.

Tip:
This format works best if you are an artist, photographer, fashion designer, model, etc and you need to demonstrate a portfolio or body of work to a prospective employer or client.

Ways of Putting your CV online...

Few formats you must consider:

Word or PDF attachment

If you want to e-mail a fancier version of your resume to an employer by attaching a Word document or Acrobat PDF file, go right ahead.
Just make sure the file is of a reasonable size (100K or less) and you still include the plain-text version in the body of your e-mail, just in case your recipient can't open or print the attachment.
In case of a PDF file, make sure the font size is a minimum of 14 or readability will take a backseat.

Tip:
The benefit of this resume is it is highly compatible and consistent in appearance across platforms, though difficult to place directly into databases.

An online friendly resume will project you as a candidate who takes initiative, is tech savvy and has relevant skills.
It will also open multiple doors for you in an extremely competitive job market.

Is it the salad itself or the dressing used and the way it is presented that makes the dish more appealing?
The analogy, and the answer, are apt when it comes to discussing a resume as well.

The perfect resume must excel in both content and format.
Spruce your resume with these simple, effective tips and you will definitely get those interview
calls.

What a resume is not

It is not a biography.

It is not a statement of purpose listing your short-term and long-term goals.

It should not just be a long list of landmarks in your professional career.

Think from a recruiter's point of view

Your potential employer may not have enough time on his or her hands to read a 10-page masterpiece, so ensure your resume does not extend beyond a couple of pages.
Leading newspapers have realised not all their readers have the time to read each and every article, which is why you see the present trend of using summary boxes for long-winded articles.

When you draft your resume, think from a recruiter's point of view.
Provide information that a prospective employer needs to know and not the kind of information you want him/ her to read.

An oft-quoted line amongst book critics is that Bill Clinton's autobiography, My Life, was a 1,000-page book that had everything in it except what people really wanted to know.
Keep this in mind when you are drafting your resume.

The purpose of a resume

A resume or curriculum vitae is a window to you, your personality and your skill sets.
Its raison d'etre is to convince a recruiter that you deserve to be called for an interview.
It should present you in the best possible light and convince a prospective employer that you can add value to the company.

It should tantalise enough to make an employer pick up the phone and dial your number.
Your resume should not simply inform; it should also excite a would-be employer.

The resume can also act as a sample of your skills.
If done well, it can show how you can organise a large amount of data in a few words.
It can also showcase your skills if you plan to opt for a career in designing, advertising or copywriting.

Summary

Here are points you must definitely include:

i. Experience in your profession

Give valuable insights; for example, if you are in the advertising industry, you could mention the big players and important names you have worked with.

ii. Skills gained in the field

Apart from skills you are expected to gain in your field of work, do highlight skills you may have picked up as extras.
For example, if you are a teacher, your expected skills would include your command over the language concerned, the ability to handle students and your knowledge about the subject concerned.

However, if you are also involved in organising workshops for teachers, you can also mention your ability to organise events and liaison effectively.

iii. General skills

This could include interpersonal skills, a knowledge of computers, etc.
If you know computer packages apart from MS Office, such as Photoshop and Adobe page maker, and if you know how to make a Powerpoint presentation, do mention it.
Many recruiters are on the look out for personnel who can multi-task.

iv. Accomplishments in concrete terms

Mention successful projects that you have handled/ been part of.

Focus on career progression, especially if you have been promoted in a short space of time.

If you have won any award or citation such as Best Employee Of The Month, mention it; this will present you in a positive light.

v. Academic record

Give your record in reverse chronological order, mentioning your most recent qualification first.

Packaging and content

Packaging is as important as content -- both should go hand in hand.

Your name, address, telephone number and e-mail address should lead your resume.

The format you use should be consistent.
Do not use too many stylistic fonts and don't change the font size too often.

The first impression is the last impression, so the first few lines must be really impressive.
List about three to four major skills and two achievements in the first summary section.
The qualities you focus on should be compelling, not generalised.

Using a job objective as a starting point is a good focal point.
Here is an example:
Job objective:
Senior-level assignments in the area of logistics and supply chain management in the Office Automation, IT/ Telecom industry in a dynamic organisation.

What a prospective employer really wants to know is what you can do for them.
Instead of just listing your achievements, try and tailor your resume to the needs of the company concerned.
It may simply mean changing a few lines here and there on a resume you have already created.

Don't be too humble.
You have to sell yourself.
Nobody else is going to do it for you.
Give concrete achievements.
For example, if you increased sales by six percent or created a database of clients, mention it instead of making generalised statements like 'used problem-solving skills' or 'created aggressive marketing strategies' that do not speak of actual results.

If you have progressed up the ladder in a particular company, you need to point this out.
For example, if you joined as a trainee and were then promoted to a managerial level within two years, mention it instead of simply saying you are a manager.

What to avoid

Lousy spellings are a real put-off.
Talk about your career prospects instead of your 'carrier' prospects.

Standardise your language.
Use either American English or British English, not a sprinkling of both.

Don't exaggerate your skills.
It may get you the job, but you will have difficulty retaining the post if you cannot deliver.

Don't talk about unrealistic goals:
'I want to progress from a cub reporter to a reporter independently handling a political beat' is realistic, while 'I aim to be editor of the newspaper soon,' is highly unrealistic.

How To Prepare A Resume

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F4.bp.blogspot.com%2F-lSnptZnYGFI%2FTiAlP8HmEMI%2FAAAAAAAAAyY%2FH-2LXQMBLrE%2Fs1600%2Fresume.jpg&hash=d5668b490b4101dbfaa17c3c2c8ecc2cd430768e) (http://www.friendstamilchat.com)

A resume is just a simple document that talks about your achievements and work experience, but can play a key role in defining your success at getting a job. When you decide to get a new job, the very first thing you do is to circulate your resume to all the potential employers. The resume contains a summary of your academic history, achievements and work experience, which happen to be the important things any employer looks at. There are no rules that have been laid down for resumes, so it is important that you conform to popular practices that are accepted by employers. Before you get onto the tips, keep in mind that the last thing you want to do is to have your resume put people to sleep. Having a resume that leaves a person in the dark, even after they have read it thrice about you can be just as bad.

Preparing A Resume
Now that we are clear on the importance of the resume, let us explore some tips on how you can make an impact with your resume.

Before you start writing the resume, collect all the information (dates, certificates, names, phone numbers, etc).

The best way to organize all the information would be to follow a time line. Mention your schooling first, then your college education, after which you can mention any other degrees you have done. Once this is over, mention any certification courses that you have attended.

When you begin to put the information in your resume, it would be wise to understand the job and the qualifications required. This will help you decide on which of your skills to concentrate on.

You can make the key skills bold to make them stand out.

If the name of your previous organization does not indicate its purpose, include a brief about the company.

Make sure that you don’t start writing a novel. A long resume can put the potential employer to sleep. Stick to the essential information only, and try to be brief with the explanation.

The objective you mention in the resume should be very specific. If you don’t want to mention one then you can avoid putting it in.

Proofread the resume once you are done preparing it and make sure you correct any and all grammatical errors and typos.

Don’t use ‘I’ or ‘my’ in the resume.

Make sure that you provide your contact information (Phone numbers, email addresses and postal address) clearly.

When you are dealing with official correspondence, it would be wise not to have email ids that sound casual ([email protected]). Try to keep the email id formal by choosing your name as the id ([email protected]).

‘Do not’ lie about anything on your resume. If you are caught even for a small lie like a false hobby, it will create a negative impression on the employer and they might not consider you for appointment.

Putting the text in a highly stylized font would not be wise either. Let the font be a normal one. Consider using ‘Arial’ or ‘Times New Roman’ and make sure that the entire resume is in the same font.

Try to keep the formatting (space between lines, words and tables) even, and don’t ever put the text in capital letter unless the situation demands it.

Always keep in mind that your resume has only 30 seconds to impress the person. So, if you do your homework and follow these tips, the 30 seconds will be more than enough to impress employers.

Awesome references and guidelines given there MYSTERY....

If everyone could follow these points and aspects, the person/people in the interviews would quite stick to asking questions only related to the technical portion/aspects of the job concerned, and would make it a whole lot easier for the candidates appearing to make a wonderful outstanding mark in front of the interviewer :) :)

Good Job... Keep Up The Good Work :)

How To Choose The Right Resume Format

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fsphotos-b.ak.fbcdn.net%2Fhphotos-ak-ash4%2F430213_10151088439184520_1536757127_n.jpg&hash=0d4a3d53e387aa9f2d548c7b04767fb1eb2181a9)

If you don't choose the right format for your resume, you can easily doom your resume to the trash can. If you are changing careers, going back to work after years away from the workplace or are just starting out with very little experience, a chronological resume could be your worst enemy! Yet, if you have a solid work history worth focusing on, then that same chronological resume could be the best way to present yourself.

Resume Formats

There are three basic resume formats, functional, chronological and combination.

Functional: The functional resume draws attention to your skills instead of your past employment or work history by grouping relevant skills and accomplishments into special categories and placing them before the work history section of your resume.

Chronological: The chronological resume places more emphasis on your past employment by listing your work history near the beginning of your resume.

Combination:The combination resume combines the best features of the functional and chronological styles by emphasizing your abilities while including a full job history. This format is quickly becoming the format of choice for upwardly mobile professionals due to its flexibility and ability to highlight strengths and skills while allowing the use of searchable keywords near the beginning of the resume.

●► Outline for Making a Resume

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fsphotos-a.ak.fbcdn.net%2Fhphotos-ak-prn1%2F40185_426197254519_4953479_n.jpg&hash=c5f0369b6c3581063338e695e95e4fed9800db87)

The employment resume is the first representation of any job seeker that reaches a hiring manager. Resume formats are typically always the same. The differences only come with the option of using a functional, chronological or combined resume format. Keep in mind not only your past work history, but the type of job objective you are seeking to fulfill when compiling the outline for your resume.

The Resume Outline

1. Every resume should have certain sections. When working on your outline make sure you have areas for your contact information; i.e, your name, address, email address and telephone numbers where the hiring department can reach you for an interview. You want to add your job objective on your resume as well. Let the hiring department know what you are hoping to gain from your employment search. What are you looking for in a job within that company and what do you hope to gain by working for them? Sections after that should include your past work history, including an explanation for any wide gaps of unemployment (school, stay-at-home parent, etc.). Also list education acquired including degrees and GPA if the employer specifies. Do not leave out the cities and states of the schools you may have attended as well as the places you have worked.

Most companies require job seekers to complete applications as well as submit a resume, so you usually do not have to list supervisor names and telephone numbers on your resume. Lastly, make sure to add any affiliations you are a part of if it is relevant to the job objective listed on your resume. Add a section for certifications and licensure. This is especially important if you are required to hold a license in your field of work. Complete your resume by adding a reference section to let the employer know that you can supply references by request. Or you can type a reference sheet and include it with the resume.

The 3 Types of Resumes

2. When wondering which type of resume outline is best, consider this information :-
A functional resume is good if you have had quite a few job changes in your career and have an unbalanced work history. It highlights your skills rather than your past jobs.A chronological resume is the most commonly used. It lists jobs and education history by date.A combined resume shows your achievements as well as the stability of your work history.

The outline you use on your resume will greatly depend on what resume type you decide will best display what you have to offer a company.

●►10 Things To Avoid In Your Cover Letter

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fsphotos-f.ak.fbcdn.net%2Fhphotos-ak-prn1%2F40026_423112504519_6961593_n.jpg&hash=98196df0af5de632f501e16126e704dd6fa83d24)

Like it or not, your cover letter is the first document that creates an impression about you (good or bad). Because first impressions really count, you need to take a careful approach to writing cover letters in order to avoid rejection. Here are the 10 major dont's you need to avoid:

1. Don’t use cover letter templates, however good they may be. There are three things you must know that go against these templates: 1) they are stale & boring 2) most templates are likely to have been downloaded from internet 3) therefore, yours will be exposed as being identical to many. Use samples to get ideas on how to write your own unique letter.

2. Don’t write a lengthy first paragraph that will only bore the reader. A lengthy first paragraph also dilutes your impressive qualities and eventually weakens the entire letter - this is the last thing you want to happen.

3. Don’t exclude your Unique Selling Proposition, or USP. Remember that the cover letter is your sales letter; you should highlight your main strengths and prepare the reader psychologically to want to read further.

4. Don’t write a vague letter without mentioning specifics, such as the job title and job code/number if you are responding to an advertisement.

5. Don’t address your cover letter ‘To Whom It May Concern’. It shows that you don’t care enough to do your research to find out who is receiving the resume packages.

6. Don’t use fanciful fonts. Don’t unnecessarily use capitalized or bolded words, or grandiose phrases. Don’t send the letter without nixing silly spelling or grammatical mistakes.

7. Don’t use cliche language such as "As afore mentioned, I am enclosing." This will only irritate the recruiter. Instead use simple phrases such as, "enclosed please find my resume."

8. Don’t include personal information like your race, sex or marital status in the cover letter. These things are against the Equal Employment Opportunity Act, and as such will not impact the decision whether or not you are called for the interview.

9. Don’t use copies of the same cover letters with just the address and date lines changed to send for similar jobs. If you don’t customize the entire body, the letter may either be irrelevant or a mistake may silently make it into the final draft.

10. Don’t brag or make statements that can't be quantified. You should be humble, yet accurate – employers these days often verify your statements for accuracy (and uncover exaggerations).

The trick with the cover letter is to capture the reader’s imagination as soon as they begin reading. This entails keeping your cover letter neat and tidy with a simple format, and avoiding common errors, such as the 10 listed above

Resume Tips

A resume gives you the opportunity to share your credentials with potential employers. It should contain your employment history, educational history, organization affiliations and professional accomplishments.

Resume Do's
- Format your resume in a reader-friendly manner. Use lists or bulleted style to make your resume even more reader-friendly.
- Include up-to-date contact information.
- Include a summary of qualifications to show why you are qualified for the position.
- List your work history in reversed chronological order.
- Include any certifications and skills that you have that relate to the position for which you are applying.
- Proofread and have a few people review your resume for errors.
- Tailor your resume to fit the position for which you are applying. It is okay to have multiple resumes for different types of positions.

For applicants who are still in school, here are some additional resume tips:
- When applying for an internship or co-op position, include your GPA.
- Include your anticipated graduation date.

Resume Don'ts
- Don't use a paragraph format.
- Don't use an unprofessional email address.
- Don't include unrelated hobbies and affiliations.
- Don't include unrelated personal information (i.e., age, number of children, etc.)
- Don't have a resume that is just a few sentences.
- Don't think that your resume has to be one page. If you have an extensive work history, you may need to use additional space so your resume won't be crammed on one page. This will help your resume be reader-friendly.
