Puli-Audio Review

Cast: Vijay,Shruti Hassan,Sridevi,Hansika,Sudeep
Music: Devi Sri Prasad
Lyrics: Vairamuthu
Direction: Chimbhu Devan

Album Analysis:
Yendi Yendi
Singers: Vijay,Shruthi Hassan
The best song of the album undoubtedly! ‘Yendi Yendi’ made an impression straightaway with the teaser. The prelude is an ode to Ilayaraja’s Geethanjali score. Vijay eases off with his rendition from where he left off at ‘Kandaangi’. Shruthi Hassan, as always, elevates the tune with pitch perfect rendition & diction. The track is easy on your ears with guitar arrangements and chimes all over. Load it in your playlists!

Puli
Singers: Mano,Priyadharshini
The title track! Although ‘Puli Puli’ had all the placement and scope to be a powerful song, the composer has somehow missed the bus. The charanam portions have less impact than that is expected out of the title track. The lyrics are also somehow jarring while hearing for the first time. Must improve with the visuals.

Jingiliyaa
Singers: Javed Ali, Pooja AV
The second best track of the album! “Jingiliyaa” is a typical DSP track which is set on the backdrop of a tribal setting. The main hook of the song is catchy & the song gets progressively better after multiple listening. Pooja does a commendable job and the song has complete scope for Vijay to showcase his dance moves.

Sottavaala
Singers: Shankar Mahadevan, MM Manasi
A typical DSP-Vijay dance number! “Sottavaala” is an interesting track on paper. Shankar Mahadevan delivers a thumping rendition but the downer comes again in the form of lyrics which aren’t that listener friendly while listening for the first time. The accompanying nadaswaram portions in the charanam are cleverly interwoven. One for the masses!

Mannavane Mannavane
Singers: Sooraj Santhosh,MLR Karthikeyan,Chinmayi,Anitha
The song is supposed to ooze grandeur in a King vs Queen setting. The arrangements pull that off to some extent while the tune struggles to sound catchy. The track is too loud at times, something that DSP needs to introspect. With full blown horns, trumpets, heavy percussions – the arrangement gets a green pass. How we wish the tune lived up to what was promised!

Manidha Manidha
Singers: Tippu
The weakest of the album! ‘Manidha Manidha’ has a preachy coating to it which needs a tune that has to elevate the lyrics. Sadly, the lyrics remain the best part of this song. Give it a miss as it needs visuals to make this better!

On the whole, ‘Puli’ has an extremely likeable melody in ‘Yendi Yendi’ while tracks like ‘Jingiliya’ & ‘Sottavaala’ are peppy outings. The remaining tracks pass muster as they depend heavily on Vijay and the visuals to pull them off now. For a canvas as big as Puli, the audio could have been much better. One hopes the audio sounds better along with the visuals.

'Puli' audio launch- Complete coverage

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2FpidjExghjbjid_small.jpg&hash=840d32db16f8fc99ff233762339fd57f61b7afbc)

The audio launch of Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s upcoming big budget period-fantasy -action entertainer, Puli has happened yesterday (August 2) at a posh resort near Mahabalipuram.

Royal theme based red carpet

Organizers of Puli audio launch had arranged for theme based red carpet, where the celebrities were given a royal welcome with horses, palanquin and warriors standing on the both sides of red carpet.

Vijay’s personal welcome

The audio launch started by 6.30 PM but right from 4 PM, Vijay stood at the entrance, welcoming each and every media person, fans and celebrities which was later appreciated by everyone who spoke about it at the function.

Producers Thameens and PT Selvakumar

The function began with Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu and moments of silence to pay respect to the late former President, APJ Abdul Kalam. After that the film’s producers—PT Selvakumar and Thameens addressed the gathering.

Thameens said “I did not expect fans arranging such large number of banners on both sides of road; even we couldn’t promote our films like them. We only gave quarter page paper advertisement for Puli but fans have given three page advertisement for this audio launch— it’s all for Vijay sir”.

“Puli happened only because of Vijay sir. Just like that, we knocked the door of Boney Kapoor because we went with the recommendation of Vijay and when we narrated the story to Sridevi mam, she immediately accepted it” added Thameens.

“When Vijay sir was shooting for Thalaivaa, he called me and said ‘anna get ready for the next film’, I thought it was yet another PRO venture for me but Vijay sir told me that he is going to act in a film produced by me and Shibu—I was totally spellbound” said PT Selvakumar.

“Vijay sir is the only actor who acted in a film for his own PRO and forever I will be grateful to him and his family” said PT Selvakumar who is Vijay’s personal manager.

Completely surprised by Vijay’s simplicity-Sridevi

Sridevi who is making a comeback in Tamil cinema after 27 years said “It’s like coming back home for me, I always loved Tamil Nadu and I will never forget my home-place”.

Sridevi also said “At first, I was little skeptical about the current working style of Tamil film industry but my co-actors made me feel comfortable, I was completely surprised by Vijay’s simplicity”.

Sridevi also thanked Chimbu Devan for giving her a solid character and also the producers, Shibu and PT Selvakumar.

Many celebrities including KS Ravikumar, SJ Suryah have said that they are huge fans for Sridevi and they came to audio launch to see her after 27 years while actresses Hansika and Nandita Sweta said that Sridevi is a huge inspiration to them.

Dream come true moment for Shruti Haasan

“When I made by debut in Tamil cinema, had a wish to work with Vijay sir and now, I’m glad that it has happened with Puli” said Shruti Haasan.

“Before Puli, I don’t know that Vijay is an extra-ordinary singer but after listening to Yaendi Yaendi, I wish I hadn’t sung that song because he rendered it so well” said Shruti Haasan.

Hansika’s Tamil speech

For the first time, Hansika gave a full on Tamil speech at Puli audio launch. The actress said “Thanks to Vijay sir for accepting such a unique script and also acting with me for the second time”.

Hansika also thanked producers PT Selvakumar and Shibu, director Chimbu Devan for the big opportunity.

Puli is a super hero movie – Thambi Ramaiah

When everyone was tight-lipped about the genre of Puli, Thambi Ramaiah broke it with his hyper enthusiasm.

“Puli is actually a super hero movie and not a historical or mythological genre as speculated by many” said Thambi Ramaiah.

“I’m sure Chimbu Devan’s script is completely unique but it demanded a superstar to play the protagonist and we should thank Vijay for accepting such a different film” added Thambi Ramaiah.

Vijay ‘Vaalu’ ku mattum illa, ‘Thalai’ kum nalladhey ninaipaar – Perarasu

Perarasu who directed Vijay’s Thirrupachi and Sivakasi said “Today, I came across news saying that Vijay helped for Simbu’s Vaalu. ‘ Not just for Vaalu, Vijay sir would wish good for ‘Thala’ (Ajith) too” .

Title Puli suits only for Vijay- SJ Suryah

SJ Suryah said “The title Puli suits only for Vijay sir and there is no prefix needed before Puli (may be took a dig at ‘Paayum’ Puli) “.

“In my experience, after Superstar Rajinikanth, Vijay is the only actor who was extremely down to earth. People appreciating Vijay for welcoming everyone, well he is a Tamilan and that’s our inborn quality” said SJ Suryah.

The director also compared Shruti Haasan with Simran and Hansika with Kushboo. When the anchor asked whether Kushi -2 will happen, the director smiled and said ‘May be at god’s will’.

I acted just like a platform for Vijay – SA Chandrasekar

SA Chandrasekar, proud father of Vijay said “When he (Vijay) wanted to act in cinema, I just provided a platform but his success actually belongs to all the producers and directors like Fazil, Vikraman, KS Ravikumar, SJ Suryah, Ramana, Dharani, Perarasu, Prabhu Deva and AR Murugadoss”.

“I request Vijay’s fans to not only follow his on screen presence, follow him in real life too” said SAC.

The director said Vijay is working hard to retain the success, “He is just eating vegetables to be fit, working 24*7. Today, even two failures would vanish an actor’s stardom in film industry hence this much hard work” said SAC.

TR’s stunning rhyming speech

The highlight of Puli audio launch is the thundering rhyming speech of T Rajendar, popular director and dad of STR.

TR got emotional while speaking about how Vijay helped for the release of Vaalu. “STR might be a fan of another actor but he is a dear friend of Ilayathalapathy Vijay” said TR.

“Despite knowing my song is a fan of another actor, Vijay helped him because both are bothers, both are Tamilans” said TR.

“May be Vijay helped for Vaalu because my son voiced out during Thalaivaa issue, maybe it’s because I spoke high on him during my Malaysian tour with SAC and Shoba  or maybe, he could have helped because STR is a fellow Tamilan” added TR.

The director said, he never attended the audio launches of superstars but he came for Puli audio launch for the golden heart of Vijay.

TR added “I see myself as the mirror image of SA Chandrasekar. I introduced my son STR to the film industry just like how SA Chandrasekar introduced Vijay” .

TR got excited and emotional for Vijay’s kind gesture and his rhyming speech lasted more than twenty minutes. Later Vijay went to the stage and honored TR with a ‘ponaadai’, only then the speech came to an end.

TR also honored Vijay with the same ‘Ponnadai’ (Silk cloth) and the duo shared moments of mutual admiration on the stage.

I had faced a lot of insults before success – Vijay

Off late, Vijay has become an excellent orator and the tremendous form continued in Puli audio launch too.

“People say ‘Behind every successful man there is a woman’ but behind my success, there were a lot of insults and embarrassments. Nothing to hide, you all knew it” said Vijay. (En Vetrigalku pin neraya avamanam dhaan iruku…ungaluku dhaan theriyumey”).

“I never really cared about people who talk behind me. Had I listened to them, I wouldn’t have been here standing in front of you” added Vijay.

The actor also made a strong statement on piracy. It has to be noted that the teaser of Puli was leaked before the official launch.

“I really don’t know about the weird pleasure of some people in ruining the plans of directors who painstakingly scheduled to release each and everything for his film” said Vijay.

Piracy is like “Killing a normal delivery baby through cesarean” said Ilaiyathalapathy Vijay. (“Piracy ngrathu, suga prasavam aaga pora kolanthaiya, caesarian panni kolrathuku samam”)

Vijay also sarcastically pointed out about the current trend of releasing first look, digital motion poster, teaser and trailer.

“Ippo dhaa edho solrangaley—first look, second look, digital motion poster, teaser and trailer, sari adha vidunga” said Vijay. The actor added “Gone are the days when we used to release only first look poster and then before fifteen days of the release, they would unveil the trailer”

The actor also said that he could completely hate someone but can’t fake in showing love and affection (“Enakku unmaya oruthara verukka theriyum aana poiya oruthara nesika theriyathu”).

Vijay also said that his motto in life is to entertain everyone. “Life is uncertain, we really don’t know what is going to happen in the next second, let’s make everyone happy in our short lifetime” said Vijay.

Speaking about his team, the actor said “Both Kamalakannan (graphics) and Sreekar Prasad are two heroes of the film, you will understand it while watching it on big screen”.

The actor also thanked Sridevi for accepting to act in the film and thanked the entire cast and crew for their support.

2200 VFX shots for Vijay's Puli:RC Kamalakannan

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2FphrpXygcaefai_small.jpg&hash=41245e8ecdf687804993bb217105e2375bad5790)

RC Kamalakannan is an ace VFX specialist who has worked in many films including Sye, Yamadonga, Naan Ee and Magadheera. He won two national awards for his work in Magadheera and Naan Ee.

“Way back in 2000, I had worked on the small CG portion of Ponnu Onna Naa Parthen in Vijay’s Kushi and now am working again with him but this time the project and backdrop are completely different” said Kamalakannan.

Speaking about his working experience with Rajamouli, Kamalakannan said “My collaboration with Rajamouli has begun with Sye and we exponentially progressed with each film where we increased the number of VFX shots. Right from Yamodonga to Eega, the number of CG shots has been progressively increased”.

Kamalakannan says that VFX work is a never ending process. “Though we had locked certain quality range for Magadheera and Eega, we re-worked few more sequences and shots for the blue-ray version” says Kamalakannan.

Apparently among all the films Kamalakannan has worked, Puli has the highest number of CG shots. “Puli has nearly 2200 VFX shots which is highest in my career. Chimbu Devan gave nearly 2700 shots for VFX but later fixed as 2200” said Kamalakannan.

Apparently, Naan Ee had 1200 VFX shots and Magadheera had 1700 shots so Puli is the career highest for Kamalakannan.

The VFX work of Puli is happening in seven different places including Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Sweden, Chennai, Bangalore and Netherlands.

“Among all the VFX experts in different countries, the work done by Russians is the best and hence some of the most difficult scenes have been handed over to them” pointed out Kamalakannan.

“Today, the standard of CG must be on a different level and audience should not find out where we have incorporated visual effects. Also, CG must be for the story conceived by the director not the other way around” said Kamalakannan.

The VFX specialist has revealed that the teaser of the film had only four VFX shots while the trailer will have more forty shots where audience could witness the grandeur and quality.

Kamalakannan also revealed that nearly 150 VFX artists have worked for Puli’s CG work and they will be soon wrapping up the post-production work.

Do not compare 'Puli' to 'Baahubali', says Chimbu Devan

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2Fpj2p7Qibeeffa.jpg&hash=f278fb9b13f6c3515f9dd24ea30261905e8578c6)

Back in 60s and 70s, fantasy films were the favorite genre in Kollywood. We had Pattinathil Bootham, Vedhala Ulagam, Allaudinum Arbutha Vilakkum but after that filmmakers did not show big interest in making such flicks. After a long time, it was Chimbu Devan who re-explored fantasy genre through his films like Imsai Arasan, Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam and now he is all set for the never seen before fantasy adventure of Indian cinema, Puli starring Ilayathalapathy Vijay, which will be releasing in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi on October 1.

“Basically I’m a cartoonist and right from my childhood days, had interest for comic books and characters. Maybe that’s why I prefer to make such fantasy flicks”, said Chimbu Devan.

“Everyone would have loved fantasy films during their childhood. Before thirty years, Tamil cinema used to produce a lot fantasy films but due to some unknown reasons, we have stopped making such movies but even now, Telugu filmmakers are exploring it”, added the director.

“Advantage of making adventure fantasy film is that this particular genre does not have language barrier. Right from six to sixties,it will be liked by all age groups, and the icing on the cake is of course, having a big hero like Vijay on board. I’m sure Puli will not only attract the loyal fans of Vijay for by all the movie buffs”, gushed Chimbu Devan.

There were rumors that Chimbu Devan went with a story board to narrate the script for Vijay but the director has a different version to say “No, I met Vijay sir only with a bounded script and right after the first listen, he told me ‘I was expecting this kind of story for a long time. Do it without making any changes’ which has gave me a lot of confidence”, said the director.

But the director indeed had a story board during the process of filmmaking. When asked, Chimbu said “ As I said earlier, being a cartoonist I had the advantage of drawing my own scenes which has helped me for having clear communication with my art director and cinematographer”.

Normally fantasy flicks in International cinema would consume a lot of time but Chimbu Devan finished Puli within one year, which is remarkable. Speaking about it, the director said “We don’t really have the freedom like foreign filmmakers but I won’t complain considering the limitation prevails here”.

“ I see the process of completing a film within the said time period is a professional ethics of a director and I’m glad we have done it in Puli”, added the director.

For Puli, Chimbu Devan along with the VFX supervisor RC Kamalakannan and art director Muthuraj worked together even before the commencement of the film. Everything is preplanned in Puli which is the main reason for completing the film in a record time.

“I would say RC Kamalkannan and Muthuraj’s work in the film is remarkable. Visuals would be seen blended in the movie that you can’t say which is real set and which one is VFX. ”, said Chimbu Devan.

Going by the trailer, the film gives us a feeling of set in ancient period with kingdom backdrop. When asked whether the dialogues used in the film is ‘classic Tamil’ or colloquial language, Chimbu Devan said “I prefer not to reveal it now because you have to experience it on screen but I’m sure it will be interesting. Watch out”.

Talking about Sridevi who is making her comeback in Tamil films after 28 years, Chimbu Devan said “Sridevi  mam plays a queen in the film. When she heard the story, her immediate reaction was ‘I have done many films in my carer but this character and backdrop is very unique. I will definitely do this project’”.

Sharing the experience in working with the legendary actress, Chimbu Devan said “ Sridevi mam is a positive person and she is completely down to earth”.

The director has already said that his film is no Baahubali and the comparison is irrelevant. “ Puli is a fantasy adventure which is sure to appeal for universal audiences. If you come without any expectation, it would be more than satisfying”, signs off Chimbu Devan.

Vijay offered prayers for 'Puli' success?

There is a buzz in K-town that Vijay has secretly offered prayers at Srivilliputhur Andal Temple for the success of his upcoming big budget movie, Puli.

Apparently, the actor is said to have covered his face so that one could identify him

But some fans noticed him in the temple and actor has requested them to not let the information out. Normally, Vijay visits Velankani Madha temple during the release of his new movies and now for the first he is said to have visited Srivilliputhur for Puli.

Puli is slated to release on October 1 in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.

Vijay watches 'Puli' with his family and friends!

Ilayathalapathy Vijay has apparently watched his soon to be released fantasy flick, Puli at the state-of-the-art Tagore Preview Theater located inside the Government Music University, R.A Puram, Adyar.

We hear that Vijay has watched the special show along with close friends and family who are said to have appreciated the actor for providing a wholesome entertainment.  Directed by Chimbu Devan, Puli has ensemble of star cast including Sridevi, Shruti Haasan, Hansika, Sudeep and many others.

Reportedly, Puli will be releasing in more than 2000 screens in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi on October 1.

"I'm watching Puli FDFS": Hansika

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2Fpj3kDKaecgbbb.jpg&hash=d66611f9abf04f4306fdec3c5e294d5c98e81b15)

2015 has been super special to Hansika as all her films like Romeo Juliet got the whopping numbers at ticket windows and Vaalu was an average grosser.  But Hansika isn’t the one to rest on her laurels and she is currently working on three films simultaneously. She is all praise for Vijay, the man of the moment and her co-star in Puli, her big release. Sridevi Sreedhar is swept over by her cool charm

Did you watch Puli?
No, I have not watched it yet. I will be going to a multiplex in Mumbai with family and friends FDFS on October 1. I am also keen to watch it in a Chennai theatre when I am there next time to see the audience reaction. And please do let me know what you thought after watching it, as I am dying to hear what audiences and critics feel about it (smiles)

But what is the feedback that you are getting?
Few people who watched the film last night is extremely happy and excited about it. They told me that kids are sure to enjoy it and the fantasy elements will grab a lot of attention.  They tell me that it is after a very long time that fantasy genre is back in Tamil. One thing is for sure and that is- It will please everyone.

So you play a princess in Puli?
Yes I play a character who is the daughter of Sridevi’s character. Initially I am very excited but it was not easy to look prim and proper all the time. My make-up and hair, costumes were heavy and I had to walk in that for the entire day. I used to take atleast three hours to get ready and it was impossible to even sit down in a chair during breaks. The dialogues were is pure Tamil and so I had to get my lip sync and posture correct. But in the end it was a very exhilarating experience.

How was it working with Vijay for second time?
(Laughs) I used to wonder how Vijay become younger by the day. He is so energetic and rubs his positivity on to others. He is a big motivating factor and it is interesting to see him so alive, free flowing and organic as the camera starts rolling.

How about Chimbu Devan, your director?
He is very clear when it comes to costumes, hair, the accessories, and he has every scene visualised before we go for the shoot. In fact my costumes and my look were decided by sir and I am happy that I got a chance to work with him.  The manner in which he shot Puli is brilliant.

How many songs do you have in the film?
I have two songs with Vijay. In the album my favs are Sottavaala and Mannavanae...

Has Baahubali created a bench mark for period films in south?
It is not fair to draw comparisons between Puli and Baahubali as they are not in the same genre. Puli is not a war film and there is no war footage in it. It is a total family entertainer with fantasy elements for kids packaged with all commercial ingredients that one expects in a Vijay film.

As an actor what’s the difference in you today from the first shot you gave in Maappilai?
Oh (smiles) Big time.. Positive feedback and success gives you the reassurance that you are doing good work and that you belong here.  I think I have created my own space here and I am in a happy zone.

IT raids team-Puli, Nayan and Samantha?

The biggest news that came in today (Sep 30) morning, is that Income Tax department has raided Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s house and also the properties of actresses, Samantha and Nayanthara. It is also said that properties of PT Selvakumar and Thameens, producers of Puli are also brought under the surveillance during this raid.

It has to be noted that the unexpected raid is happening just before release the day of Puli, a big budget fantasy film, which will be releasing in more than 2000 screens worldwide.

We hear that nearly 25 to 30 locations in Tamil Nadu, Hyderabad and Kerala are being raided.

Puli update: Theaters cancelled morning show, confusion prevails!

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2Fpj4klJcigjhjb.jpg&hash=4327aa35eda33d924558f2d87a4668fdbbadb2c8)

For Ilayathalapathy fans, who are clueless about the sudden hindrance on the release of Puli, here is the information what we have collected from our sources.

Apparently, Puli producers are yet to get clearance from Qube for which they have to settle the pending amount. Because of the income tax raid, distributors and theater owners were unable to reach the producers.

If producers of Puli settle the pending amount to Qube, KDM would be sent  to respective theaters and shows will begin as planned.

Mean time, some of the theaters have informed that the morning show of Puli have been officially cancelled while others are waiting for the final word from the producers.

In overseas, the premiers are being cancelled and they have informed the patrons that the film will only releasing by noon.

Mean time, there is also a buzz that Puli has some dialogues which indirectly targets the ruling government and if the makers mute the scenes, the film might get release as planned.

Just like how Vijay's Thalaivaa got released by removing the 'Time to Lead' caption, Puli too has some politically ambitious dialogues and hence the film has not got tax exemption.

On Wednesday, IT department had raided the places of actor Vijay, his Puli producers- PT Selvakumar and Thameens which eventually delayed the release of the film.. It is said the team couldn’t settle the pending amount to Gemini labs and hence they have not cleared the film for release..

As funds of Vijay and the producers are blocked, they were unable arrange huge amount on Wednesday (Sep 30). Apparently, the morning shows and overseas premiere are already cancelled as KDM was not given from QUBE who had in turn waited for the clearance from Gemini labs.

Our sources say that Jaswanth Bandari, a famous financier has helped out Puli team in the issue and now , as the amount has been paid, one can expect that the film will release with 12pm shows in Tamil Nadu.

We also hear that Vijay is currently in Gemini labs and negotiating with concerned authorities to ensure a smooth release for the film.

Puli Review

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2FpkbqrGgeeagbj.jpg&hash=66e732f7b4694afffe4cec86e28bc3f3d5bc75c4)

Director:Chimbu Devan
Cast:Vijay, Sridevi, Sudeep, Hansika, Shruti

It is really hard to pin down the true merits of Vijay’s much hyped Puli. It is a big film in all respects- big stars, big canvas, big expenditure on SFX and above all huge expectations. Sadly, all said and done, Puli disappoints, though director Chimbu Devan and his hero Vijay has to be lauded for making a fantasy/adventure film, a rarity in Tamil cinema.

The director doesn’t seem to have looked too far for inspiration to make this fantasy film, which has the hero playing the roles of multiple warriors-a father and a son both Vedhalams (!!) Given the fact that Puli rests on a thin plot, there's not much that director Chimbu Devan can do to salvage the show.

Vedhalapuram is ruled by queen Yavana (Sridevi) but she acts as per the words of her tyrant commander/Thalapathy Jaladarangan( Sudeep) who uses magical powers and turns her into a mere puppet. Mean while, our hero Marudheeran ( Vijay) lives a happy life with his girlfriend Pavala Malli( Shruti Haasan) and foster father(Prabhu).

When the army men from Vedhalapuram kidnaps Pavala Malli and kills Marudheeran's father, he  enters Yavana's kingdom in disguise of a Vedhalam. At one point of time, Marudheeran earns the trust of Yavana that she even announces the marriage of her daughter Princess Mandakini (Hansika) to him.The rest of the film tells us whether Marudheeran saves his people and girlfriend from the evil queen or not.

The film’s biggest weakness, is that the script’s real backbone – the mythological relevance and back-story, that is conveyed in such a boring manner that it simply comes off sounding like mumbo-jumbo. The romantic track between Vijay and Shruti’s characters looks so forced, it practically jumps at you as each song bursts out of nowhere.

On the upside, the camera work by Natraj, set designs by T Muthuraj, VFX by Kamalakannan and the action scenes are spectacular. Among the songs by Devi Sri Prasad it is only "Yendi..Yendi..." that is hummable. The effort taken by Vijay to make a special kind of film is visible on the screen. But sadly the director lacks the imagination required to pull off what he set out to achieve.

Another drawback is that unlike Chimbu Devan's earlier movies, here comedy falls flat and even few laughs that come in-between are double-meaning, which seriously raises a question whether the same director made the clean laugh-riot Imsai Arasan and watertight Oru Kanniyum Moonu Kalavanigalum.

Vijay tries hard to make his charisma work with comedy, punch lines and dance. Sridevi's over-the-top performance falls flat while Hansika and Shruti in their small parts has little to do but look pretty. Sudeep has a terrific introduction scene but the predictable negative role offers him nothing to be proud of. Imman Annachi, Thambi Ramaiah, Robo Shankar and Vidyullekha as dwarfs tries hard to bring laughter.

A crisper script and a lighter directorial hand is what are missing here. Alas, it’s a fantasy film without any of the fun and excitement that ought to go with it. You wouldn't mind a 3-hour film in fantasy genre even today, provided it has the power to keep you glued to the screen. In this case, the 154 minutes seem never-ending.

Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s Puli has taken phenomenal opening at the worldwide box office.

Despite the last minute delay and cancellation of early morning shows and premieres, the film has definitely proved the star power and huge fan base of the actor.

In Tamil Nadu, the film has grossed nearly 10 crs on day one and we also hear, that the film has sustained well on the second day, thanks to Gandhi Jayanti (holiday).

In Kerala, the film has collected 1.75 crs on day one while it has grossed a phenomenal 2.10 crs in Karnataka.  Altogether, Puli has grossed more than 15 crs in India while the estimated worldwide gross is around 19.5 crs.

''Puli' grosses 71cr worldwide, says SKT studios

Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s Puli carried mixed reviews and Word of mouth. Collections too has showed a steep drop, considering the massive opening that the film took and it has been shifted to smaller screens in all multiplexes. Unlike Vijay blockbusters, there is no repeat audience for the film.

Now SKT Studios, the production house of the film has announced that Puli has grossed RS 71cr worldwide on its first week. “Happy to announce the 1st Week collection of #Puli worldwide Gross-71 Crores even after the mixed reviews”, wrote the official Twitter handle of SKT Studios.

Directed by Chimbu Devan, Puli  had big stars like Sridevi, Shruti Haasan, Hansika and Sudeep. Considering the huge cost of production, and the price at which it was sold, will Puli  be a profitable venture for buyers?
