Cast:  Karthi, Catherine Tresa, and others
Director: Pa.Ranjith
 Production: K.E.Gnanavel Raja, S.R.Prakash Babu, S.R.Prabhu
Music Director: Santhosh Narayanan
Lyricis: Kabilan, Uma Devi, Gana Bala

The return of, Ranith with his find Santosh Narayan has promised so much ever since they announced the project. The songs of, ‘Attakathi’ are still making its rounds in all the music channels. With Karthi on board, the expectation meter clogged a few more points. In between ‘Attakthi’ and this project, Santosh has already placed him on the top with back to back hit albums with, ‘Pizza’,  ‘Soodhu Kavvum’, ‘Villa’, ‘Cuckoo’, and ‘Jigarthanda’. Let’s see what’s up in store for the highly antcipated, ‘Madras’ album.

1. Agayam Theepidicha

Singer: Pradeep Kumar

Santosh Narayan is back so does the acoustic guitars too. The song takes off, travels, and makes a pleasant landing with guitar leading from the background. As the song progress, one could hear the brilliant acceleration done by the composer with guitars and rest of the instruments. Pradeep has complemented very well with the beautiful tune to evoke the feelings of a lover. The last 30 seconds where Pradeep gets high with the fast paced guitar notes will go on a loop for some time.

2. Kaakidha Kappal

Singer: Gaana Bala

Unlike other genres, Gaana, doesn’t provide ample opportunities to be creative. Somehow, Gaana Bala finds a place to improvise in his every outing. It is Santosh once again who created a western background for a theme that focuses on love failure. The steady drums, string sections, trumpets, and chorus goes well with Bala’s vocals. This could well become the next sensational soup song.

3. Madras

Singer(s): Hariharasudhan, Meenakshi Iyer

As the album unfolds, Santosh keeps thumping the previous songs to dish out a whole new experience. Hariharasudhan has delivered the song with collars up fistful attitude. If you’re a Chennaite you will get goose bumps when the song ends with brilliant chorus singing, ‘Enga ooru Madras idhukku naanga daane address’. The orchestration stands out once again. At the moment, Santosh got the best of  technicians and a great place to compose his songs. Every instrument makes its presence felt separately. A new theme for the Metropolitan city that also celebrates the glory and signature culture of North Madras people.

4. Naan Nee

Singer(s): Shakthishree Gopalan, Dheekshitha

A glutted number which does not have a launch pad. The song starts off without an apt prelude and takes its own time to set the mood for the melody. Nevertheless, after the first minute, Shakthishree pulls us into the song with her magnetic vocals. The violins take the centre stage for a change in a Santosh number. An out of box experimental melody that may not go well with the listeners.

5. Irandhidava

Singer: Gaana Bala

Bala returns for a pathos based on popular North Madras style. This is more of a singer’s song than the composer’s. Santosh has ensured he plays a second fiddle to Bala’s vocals and woven a neat theme around the lyrics. With verses like, ‘Puratchi seiya purappatadhe anbe un payanam.. nee pudhumai pala seivadharkkul unakka maranam.’.  Bala succeeds in elevating the sad quotient.

6. Suvar – Instrumental

The first look posters featured a Suvar (Wall) and the hero Karthi spoke about the importance of a wall in the story. A theme track for the same conveys the utmost importance of the ‘wall’ in the story. Within 75 seconds, Santosh, stops and starts with violins, bells, and a haunting background voice. The way it ends with couple of drum beat like thunderstorm is fabulous.

7. Kaali love – Instrumental

A lovely track which would allow listeners to imagine their own lyrics to their respective love story. A stellar arrangement of instruments makes this a wonderful listen and a fitting end to a brilliant OST.

Undoubtedly, Santosh Narayan is second to none in the new generation music composer. He is ready for every given genre and scoring blockbusters after blockbusters. He is pretty careful with the projects he’s getting involved which is great to see. ‘Cuckoo’ and ‘Jigarthanda’ were almost travelling from North pole to South Pole. With this movie he has proved that he can do any genre with at most ease. Given his success, Santosh Narayan might lead the Tamil music in the years to come.

Director: Pa Ranjith
Cast: Karthi, Catherine, Kalaiarasan
Music: Santhosh Narayan
Producer: Studio Green

Straight to the point on Pa.Ranjith Madras-It is a gutsy and outstanding film. Karthi has made a sensational comeback as an actor and as a star. He lives the role as Kaali, a character driven role in a film where screenplay and writing is given paramount importance.

The story takes place entirely in Vysarpadi area of North Madras. It has been depicted in many Tamil films as a place where gangsters, politicians and crime rules. However it is Ranjith’s narration, screenplay and unfolding of events that hooks us straightaway. The director in a voice over gives us a backgrounder and introduces us to the characters and their connect with the area.

The bone of contention between two local parties is over who has the right over a huge wall in a housing board flat. Remember in Dravidian politics wall writing, hoardings and painting was part of image building by political leaders and local satraps. Ranjith has based the entire film on the ownership and fight over the wall.

The story is also about the deep friendship and bonding between Kaali (Karthi) and Anbu (Kalaiarasan) who live in the area. The place is made up of characters like Johnny (Hari) a former thug who has now become a lunatic, rising politician Mari (Vinod) Kalairani (Catherine) who is Kaali’s love interest and many others. The characters are drawn into local politics, one-man upmanship games, romance, betrayal and bloody revenge.

Madras works big time as writer and director Ranjith has given priority to his script, which hooks the audiences straightaway. It is a triumph of honest writing and heartfelt dialogues. Anbu’s death scene and the interval block are simply terrific.

It is Karthi’s best ever film after Paruthiveeran. He has made a smashing comeback as an actor of substance. He inhabits Kaali with consummate ease, can feel the wetness of his tears and the anger in his eyes. Catherine is adequate and her lip sync is perfect. The romance between Karthi and Catherine is cool and crackles.

Special mention should be made of the supporting cast of actors who raises the bar. Kalaiarasan as Anbu is riveting. His body language and dialogue delivery in almost a parallel role is terrific. And Hari who plays Johnny the lunatic is good; Ritwika as Anbu's wife Mary and Rama as Kaali’s mom are all natural and realistic.

Another major plus for the film is Santosh Narayanan’s music and BGM. The songs “Kaagidha Kappal”, “Aagayam” and Gana Bala’s pathos song are the pick. The drum sound in the climax gives you goose bumps. Murali's camera is a character by itself and night effect shots add to the mood. Art director T Ramalingam has made it look as natural and entire film has been shot in North Madras actual locations.

A big thums up to editor Praveen, for making it racy, especially the action scenes which look real. The action scenes in the film choreographed by Anbariv are stunning.

On the downside, the climax is too long and too many songs especially in the second half make it lengthy. However Madras is good cinema. Hats off to Ranjith for his detailing in script and presentation and the way he has extracted spellbinding performances from his cast.

Rajinikanth lauds 'Madras'

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2FokbsTDgicefhe_small.jpg&hash=9c813f45dc33d462fa1d328ab9e2d1afbea7a656)

Pa Ranjith’s Karthi starrer Madras is getting rave reviews not only from the media but also from celebrities in Kollywood. The gritty and realistic film is being viewed by all main stream actors

Last week Studio Green the producers of the film arranged a special screening of Madras for superstar Rajinikanth. Rajinikanth after watching the film remarked: “super kanna super kalakitta..eppadi kanna ippadi shoot panna..super!”

Madras is definitely all set to sweep a lot of awards. At the box-office due to good word of mouth the film is doing good business.

The content of 'Madras' is fiction, says Pa Ranjith

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2Fokmqscbbehacb.jpg&hash=c45e4c51a2ae86f90dbff705e95c690edc419197)

Fresh from the success of his second directorial ‘Madras’,  Ranjith speaks by telling us what went into the process of conceptualization of the movie. Here are the excerpts from the interview:

Did you expect this kind of an acclaim for ‘Madras’?
Well, I was skeptical whether people would accept the dialect that’s spoken in the movie. There was also a fear that people would discount the ‘wall issue’ as trivial. Luckily, people stood by us and have given us this success.

You have said that the movie is inspired by real life incidents. How did you zero-in on this content?
The incident is based on a real life experience. But the content is fiction. The conversations, incidents are all real and I have mixed those according to the demands of the story.

What is the kind of response you got from people within the industry after watching the movie?
Many directors saw the movie and had good words to say to me. People like Seenu Ramasamy, Sasi, Karu Palaniappan, H. Vinoth, Naveen, Balaji Sakthivel spoke to me after watching the movie. All of them had nice things to say about the movie.

Santhosh Narayanan’s music had received unanimous positive acclaim and the background score worked wonders. He started his career with you in ‘Attakaththi’. So, how do you see his growth?
The growth is phenomenal. The key is to make him understand the plot and once he connects himself with the plot, he will be involved with the script throughout. He takes care of the background score completely too. As far as Madras is concerned, he liked the script and worked fantastically.

What’s your next movie going to be about?
I haven’t started my next project as of now. There are offers and I will decide in another 2-3 weeks.

Karthi on a roll, Madras celebrates 50 days!

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2FolotbFechcagh.jpg&hash=e172f88f96e50602114cad58ed1b0dc6c0fe85aa)

Today (Nov 16), Karthi’s Pa Renjith directed Studio Green produced Madras celebrates 50 days. The film has been raved by the critics and has worked at the box-office.

Madras is a great comeback for Karthi as an actor of substance. It is his best film after his debut Paruthiveeran. There was a certain amount of rawness and realism in the character he portrayed in the film. He lives the role of Kaali, a North Madras based IT professional who is seething inside.

The film was also a box-office hit. Karthi’s after series of failures has bounced back with the character driven role. It proves that all he needs is good directors and a powerful script to shine on screen. He should not be doing mindless masala films, which is not able to exploit the actor in him.

After regaining his box-office clout, Karthi’s next release will be Komban directed by M Muthaiah. In the film he is pitted opposite Raj Kiran who plays his father-in-law, with Lakshmi Menon playing the heroine. The shoot of the film is complete and it will release in December/January.
