64 years later, a new Brazil hosts the World Cup

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2Foggladhjbgfsi_small.jpg&hash=bdf942d5fd00af71944929cb3ea02c65f1c51dc1)

Today's Brazil is a completely different country from the one that last hosted the World Cup in 1950 but some things have hardly changed even after 64 years.

Now as then, the fans' desperation to see games is matched only by the authorities' inability to build stadiums on time and under budget.

This year's tournament will be held across 12 cities in June and July and will cost at least 28 billion reais ($12.32 billion), almost a third of which will go on luxurious new or modernised stadiums.

Three of the 12 arenas – in Brasilia, Sao Paulo and the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro - will cost more than 1 billion reais each, and yet only two of the 12 were delivered on time.

The 1950 matches were played at just six grounds, including the Maracana, which was built in less than two years at a cost of 430 million reais in today's money, said Diego Salgado, co-author of the book, "1950: The Price of a World Cup."

More than 90 percent of the entire budget for the 1950 tournament went on that one stadium, Salgado said. Authorities delayed years before starting construction work and then went over budget.

"It's been 64 years but we're seeing a rerun of what happened back then," Salgado told Reuters.

"The costs rose because it was urgent. The first game to be played at the Maracana was played seven days before the first game of the World Cup."

Brazil had not yet won football's greatest trophy in 1950 but has since established itself as the dominant power, winning the World Cup a record five times. Fans the world over celebrated in 2007 when the South American giant won the right to host the 2014 tournament.

Brazil's politicians vowed it would be a golden opportunity for the developing nation to add much needed infrastructure but with days to go until the opening match, much of the promised works have not materialised.

In 1950, as now, Brazil saw the World Cup as a chance to show off to the world, said David Goldblatt, author of the book, "Futebol Nation: The Story of Brazil through Soccer."

The country was modernising quickly and seeking more of a global presence. And, then as now, there were elections taking place following the tournament with politicians seeing it as a chance to show off.

CHAOTIC PLANNING

While Brazil's traditionally chaotic planning has embarrassed even Cup backers like former striker Ronaldo, who has two winners' medals, it has not affected demand.

Around 3 million tickets have been sold for this year's tournament and close to 800,000 people are expected to come from abroad to watch matches.

They will see a spectacle that is unrecognisable to the one held here more than half a century ago.

Back then only two of the grounds were built specially for the tournament and they were considered progress, fitting monuments both to the game that had taken Brazil by storm and to the country's pretensions of grandeur.

The Maracana was finished so late that English referee Arthur Ellis reported plaster falling from the walls when a 21-gun salute went off and a Yugoslav player cut his head on an exposed steel beam, Goldblatt said.

"On the other hand I look at the Maracana and it was a much more generous vision than the vision today," he added. "As well as the football stadium they built other stuff. The athletics track and swimming pool were intended for public use and the school as well."

And although only 13 teams took part, compared to 32 today, interest was high. Football was already a religion in Brazil and the average attendance for the 22 games was 47,511, still more than at all but seven of the 19 World Cups.

Today the tournament is massive. There were more than 800 qualifying matches for 2014, compared to just 27 for the 1950 Cup.

FIFA has budgeted for $3.8 billion in revenues during the period 2011-14, with around 85-90 percent of that coming from the World Cup, according to official figures. Roughly 60 percent is from TV deals and the rest comes from sponsors, licensing and hospitality rights, FIFA said.

In 1950 there were no major sponsors of any kind and no live TV coverage because outside broadcasts had not been invented. The Jules Rimet trophy was placed in the window of a Rio jewelers for fans to see.

This year the Original FIFA World Cup™ Trophy – it has no name but it is trademarked - will spend 267 days traveling to 88 different countries so fans can catch a glimpse of it behind a glass screen.

Perhaps the biggest similarity between the two tournaments is the home nation's desire to win. In 1950, Brazil fell to Uruguay at the final hurdle and the defeat was so catastrophic that people are still talking about it.

They are hoping for a different ending this time.

"There's been a black cloud hanging over the Maracana ever since that game," Amarildo, a striker who played for Brazil at the 1962 World Cup and who remembers the 1950 defeat as a nine-year old boy, told Reuters.

"The only way it will be lifted is if we win the final this time."

FIFA World Cup: Every player to be tested for drugs

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2Fof4l4jajaicsi.jpg&hash=242e4c5125fb4bdfba6afec2cc235d648baa8ce4)

Laussane, Switzerland:  FIFA is on an ambitious mission to make sure that for the first time every player who takes part in the World Cup has a drug test and carries a 'biological passport'.

Football's governing body wants to impose the passport -- already used in cycling and athletics -- that will follow a player throughout his career, giving details of blood and urine tests.

Since March, a team of FIFA doctors and nurses have been carrying out random blood and urine tests at internationals and team training camps.

Lionel Messi's Argentina and France were visited last week at their camps to prepare for the tournament, according to media reports.

Brazilian star Neymar, Italian captain Gianluigi Buffon and Spain's Andres Iniesta were among those who gave samples at last year's Confederations Cup.

Chelsea, Barcelona, Santos and Monterrey stars were tested during international club competitions over the past 18 months.

Players can expect a tap on the shoulder right from the first matches of the World Cup which starts June 12.

"We can test anybody, anytime, anywhere, any amount of times," said Jiri Dvorak, FIFA's chief medical officer in a recent interview.

So far nothing alarming has turned up, according to Dvorak. "The hematological parameters are normal," he said.

FIFA is building up a biological passport on all players.

It has taken at least two test samples from most players while some have given up to four.

So far teams have made the doping investigators welcome. "They understand what we are doing and they consider that kind of examination as part of their professional life," said Dvorak.

The FIFA tests look for discrepancies in haemoglobins and red cells that could indicate EPO doping or other banned efforts to boost endurance. These kinds of tests are already used in cycling and athletics.

Football's governing body also checks hormone levels and for anabolic steroids in the urine.

The drug testing logistics in Brazil face difficulties, Dvorak acknowledged.

There is no international standard laboratory in Brazil. The World Anti-Doping Agency withdrew its accreditation for the only facility in Rio de Janeiro last year.

FIFA will be sending its samples to a laboratory in Lausanne, Switzerland, which will add $250,000 (180,000 euros) to the doping clampdown costs.

And as blood samples must be analysed within 36 hours of being drawn, it will be a race against time to get samples from far-flung World Cup cities such as Manaus in the Amazon and Fortaleza.

"It is a challenge," acknowledged Dvorak.

But transport from stadiums has already been tested.

"There are a few games that are difficult. But the majority of the samples will arrive at the laboratory between 24 and 48 hours," said Dvorak. The Lausanne laboratory will work 24 hours a day during the World Cup, he added.

"Some of the matches are critical, the critical matches we will look at very carefully," the medical chief said.

Football has had relatively few declared cases of performance-enhancing doping.

Argentine star Diego Maradona was sent home from the 1994 World Cup after testing positive for the stimulant ephedrine.

Last year there were cases involving internationals from Jamaica, Peru and Tahiti. But FIFA believes the smaller football nations are less aware of the risks involved.

Cannabis and cocaine have made up the majority of drug failures in football in recent years, according to FIFA.com, the world body's website.

FIFA's biological passport could spread further than the World Cup though.

A scientific review of the FIFA campaign will be published at the end of the year. If it backs the drug testing, the world body may press the major leagues to start their own regimes.

We reacted strongly to turn the match around: Neymar

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2FognkSvbbjfhsi_small.jpg&hash=36183ec93f458fd7d208f51e75a7e56e73b3bf2b)

Sao Paulo: Star striker Neymar was happy with the way Brazil turned around the match after conceding an early goal, through Marcello's own goal, to beat Croatia 3-1 in the opening match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup here Thursday.

The Barcelona star struck twice and Oscar scored the third goal in injury time to give Brazil a winning star against the resilient Croatians.

"I'm very, very happy to score two goals to help the team win the match. I'm happy that we react strongly to turn the match around. We have a strong squad. If we don't play connected we wouldn't win the match," said Neymar.

Brazil coach Luiz Scolari hailed Neymar, considered one of the best in the world, saying the youngster was under lot of pressure to score.

"Neymar has great quality, and he has a lot of pressure. Today he scored two goals. All we want is Neymar to be happy playing," said Scolari.

Scolari said Neymar doesn't need to be be reminded that he is the best in the world.

"He plays for the team and we also play for him. He doesn't need anyone to tell him he is the best in the world. He just need to continue playing for the team, for Brazil," he said.A

Reacting to Croatian coach Niko Kovac's claims that referee Yuichi Nishimura of being partial to his side, Scolari said the Japanese was spot in awarding the penalty in the 70th minute after Dejan Lovren challenged Fred in the penalty box. Neymar concerted from the spot giving Brazil a 2-1 lead.

"It's up to the referee to decide if it's a penalty, for me it's also a penalty. I watched maybe 10 times of the play and I think it's a penalty," said Scolari.

This was the third encounter between the two teams. The first was a friendly held in 2005 in Split that finished 1-1. The second took place in the opening round of the 2006 World Cup in Berlin, when Brazil secured a 1-0 victory.

This was also the fourth time that Brazil played a World Cup opener. In the previous curtain-raisers, Brazil notched two wins (4-0 over Mexico in 1950 and 2-1 against Scotland in 1998) and one draw (0-0 against former Yugoslavia in 1974).

Mumbai boy predicts first goal of World Cup 2014!

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2FognkSkcahgasi_small.jpg&hash=d9ed920a08840af422a2b6ed7461704560e2a2c5)

Mumbai: He is being called 'Nostradamus' and the 'Octopus for FIFA 2014' and for a good reason too, for Mumbai youngster, John Raphael, believe it or not, accurately predicted that Fifa World Cup 2014 would start off with an own goal.

John, with the Twitter handle @RaphaelJohn13, tweeted an hour before Brazil took on Croatia on Thursday that the first World Cup goal would be an own goal and even astonishingly named the Brazilian player Marcelo.

Thanks to his bizzarely accurate prediction, the 21-year-old economics graduate of St Xavier?s, Mumbai, became an overnight celebrity and his ?followers? increased by a thousand in less than 12 hours. He even made news in Belgium and trended heavily in Manchester.

'There is nothing to it,' he says. 'I have been following football for a long time now and Tweeting about it. But I guess there was nothing this big to have caught attention, especially since it was the first match of the World Cup,' said the Manchester United fan.

In fact, his first prediction was something different, 'Initially, I thought Mercelo will score for Brazil, but then I felt that it was going to be for Croatia instead and went online with it,' he says, insisting that he is 'no psychic'.

But he says that he doesn't plan to predict all the matches.

'I don't plan to predict for all the matches. I guess I am going to follow my gut feeling and tweet if I feel something strongly,? he says, adding, 'and I am not supporting any country in particular.'

Now, several other 'psychics' have taken to twitter using the same hashtag to promote their predictions.

Mexico beat Cameroon 1-0

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2FognwCMbghaihe_small.jpg&hash=8e5933d5a23fac9b51d9f637455ee2c15a705643)

Mexico beat Cameroon 1-0 in Group A with Oribe Peralta sweeping home a rebound for the game's only goal in the 61st minute.

El Tricolor had two first-half goals incorrectly disallowed for offside, with former Tottenham striker Giovani Dos Santos the unlucky player on both occasions.

But, Peralta's finish means they join hosts Brazil on three points after Group A's opening fixtures.

In the first half, Giovanni Dos Santos twice had goals disallowed as Mexico and Cameroon played through a scoreless first half in torrential rain.

Dos Santos appeared to have put Mexico ahead in the 11th minute, but was ruled offside. He headed in from a corner in the 29th but it was called back when referee Wilmer Roldan appeared to call a foul in front of Cameroon goalkeeper Charles Intandje.

The heat was supposed to be a factor in this balmy coastal city, but heavy rain swamped the Arenas das Dunas for four hours Friday morning and continued through the first half, creating a slick and slippery pitch.

Spain tumbled to its second consecutive loss in the opening match of a World Cup and its heaviest defeat in the games showcase tournament since capitulating 6-1 to Brazil in 1950.

'World Cup is over for me', says Beckenbauer

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2Fjdqwmcfcjfdsi.jpg&hash=f74ef5c4054dcf3d5150351c3b4c3e57a868779c)

Franz Beckenbauer will skip the World Cup in Brazil after the former West Germany captain and coach was banned by FIFA for 90 days for allegedly refusing to co-operate with an investigation into World Cup bidding. FIFA confirmed on Saturday that Beckenbauer is banned from attending any match at any level for the next 90 days, even in a private capacity. He will, however, be allowed to continue as a television pundit from a studio in Germany.

In an interview with Germany's Bild newspaper published on Saturday, Beckenbauer said he had decided to cancel his plans to attend the semi-finals and final after being banned on Friday.

FIFA said Beckenbauer had received repeated requests to provide information to an ethics committee investigation. Beckenbauer said he wanted the questions posed in German.

Beckenbauer, 68, has said he had nothing to hide from the committee and that he would answer questions in his native German language.

"The World Cup is cancelled for me," Beckenbauer said. "I'll drop the plans to travel to Brazil. I assume that I'm not welcome by FIFA any more."

Beckenbauer was on the FIFA executive committee which controversially awarded the 2022 World Cup hosting rights to Qatar.

His ban was imposed at the request of U.S. lawyer Michael Garcia, head of the investigatory chamber of FIFA's ethics committee, who is leading an investigation into alleged corruption over the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar.

Alan Sullivan, the deputy chairman of FIFA's ethics committee's adjudicatory panel, said in a statement on Saturday: "Franz Beckenbauer cannot participate in any football-related activity which includes amongst other things being invited to attend or attending on a private basis any football match in any capacity."

Beckenbauer is regarded as one of the greatest players to have graced the game and is revered in Germany, where he is honorary president of Bayern Munich, and abroad.

As a player, Beckenbauer redefined the role of libero and captained the West Germany side which won the 1974 World Cup.

He led West Germany to World Cup victory as a coach in 1990 and was head of the local organising committee when Germany hosted the tournament in 2006.

Beckenbauer is an honorary president of Bayern Munich and a special adviser to FIFA's football committee. He had planned to go on Bayern Munich's pre-season tour of the United States in August.

Five World Cup statistics

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2FogqwzOfabigab_small.jpg&hash=9b66177a96d7934885d0413a85f4216b36b6b271)

The World Cup's opening group games have produced several record-breaking moments in a scintillating start to the tournament. Here are five such moments.

1. The first 16 games produced 49 goals, an average of 3.06 per game.

The scoring spree has made this World Cup one of the most exciting in memory and it is on track to be the highest scoring since the 1958 finals in Sweden which averaged 3.60 goals.

Hosts Brazil helped push up the tally with a 3-1 victory against Croatia while Germany's 4-0 win over Portugal in their opener boosted the total.

So far the Dutch have netted the most in a match, thrashing Spain 5-1 in the tournament's highest scoring game. Only one match has so far finished goalless - Iran v Nigeria.

The 1998 World Cup in France produced 171 goals, the most overall in a tournament.

2. Clint Dempsey scores fifth-fastest World Cup goal

The United States captain shocked Ghana 30 seconds into the match when he slammed a left-footed shot in off the post in their Group G opener.

The strike, behind Bryan Robson's goal in 27 seconds for England in 1982 and ahead of Emile Veinante's 35-second goal for France in 1938, also made Dempsey the first American to score in three World Cups.

The fastest goal at a World Cup was scored after 11 seconds by Turkey's Hakan Sukur against hosts South Korea in 2002 in the third-place playoff match.

3. Six come from behind wins in the first 16 games

The see-saw action has shown that no lead is safe. Brazil fell behind to an own goal to Croatia to start tournament but fought back for a 3-1 win.

World champions Spain opened the scoring with a Xabi Alonso penalty before Robin Van Persie led a Dutch fightback.

Costa Rica recovered to shock Uruguay, Switzerland regrouped to defeat Ecuador in stoppage time and the Ivory Coast rebounded to beat Japan. Belgium came from behind to win against Algeria.

4. Germany become first team to play 100 World Cup games

Germany became the first side to play 100 matches as the three-time champions strolled to a 4-0 victory against Portugal.

Germany boast a record of 61 wins, 19 draws and 20 defeats while scoring 210 goals and conceding 117. They won the World Cup in 1954, 1974 and 1990.

5. Juergen Klinsmann maintains undefeated opening day record

United States coach Klinsmann preserved his record of having won the opening match at every World Cup he has competed in as a player and coach after a last-gasp 2-1 victory against Ghana.

Klinsmann played for Germany at the 1990, '94 and '98 World Cups and guided them to third spot at the 2006 finals on home soil.

Where Messi leads, Argentina must follow

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2FogqfDycadhcjc_small.jpg&hash=1b5a2a88704b57ae466e4fc9c19183c14e265ee1)

Champions Nigeria have something to prove when they meet in their final World Cup Group F match on Wednesday.

Argentina were among the favourites going in to the tournament but despite a much-vaunted front four, they have yet to come alive, with the exception of some moments of match-winning magic from Lionel Messi.

Nigeria, representing Africa's richest and most populous nation, have also laboured to convince as a team.

Nonetheless, Argentina sit atop Group F with six points thanks to their less-than-emphatic wins over Bosnia and Iran.

The Sky Blues have already qualified for the Round of 16 but will still want finish first to ensure an easier opponent - in principle at least - in the next stage.

Nigeria have four points following a dull draw with Iran and a win over first-timers Bosnia. A draw would be enough to ensure qualification but a loss to Argentina could put them in trouble.

Iran, who surprised many with their tenacious, bold play against Argentina, could still seize second place if they beat Bosnia and rack up a better goal difference.

So a game that could see as much anxiety as adventure is on the cards.

Messi's sublime strike against Iran in stoppage time in Belo Horizonte only highlighted the danger of Argentina relying on the Barcelona man too much. It wasn't supposed to be like that.

He and his fellow strikers Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain and Angel Di Maria form what should have been one of the most formidable attack forces in the tournament, but so far it has been rather blunt.

The defence has also looked shaky, with central defender Ezekiel Garay repeatedly caught off guard against Iran.

"We have a few causes for concern," head coach Alejandro Sabella admitted after the close-shave against Iran.

With other Latin American teams such as Chile and previously unheralded Costa Rica powering ahead and delighting fans along the way, Argentina will need to step up the pace if they are to quickly regain what they see as their rightful place at the front.

"We know we are not playing as well as we are expected," Messi said. "But as we go along in the tournament, we will be improving and we will reach our full potential."

Argentina will be able to count on fervent support - tens of thousands of fans are expected to flood over the border into the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, a region which shares its gaucho culure but harbours an intense soccer rivalry.

Nigeria may take heart from the fact that they made a slow start in the African Nations Cup before going on to take the title last year.

The Super Eagles cannot afford to give anything away at the back but will need to hunt for goals if they are to be sure of qualifying for the Round of 16 for the first time since 1998.

Playing in their fifth World Cup, Nigeria's performance against Bosnia was an improvement on the Iran game, when they look bereft of ideas. But their defensive frailties were exposed on several occasions and that could prove fatal with a hungry wolf like Messi on the prowl.

Authorities will reinforce security for Argentina's World Cup match against Nigeria on Wednesday in Brazil's southern city of Porto Alegre, which is expected to see a huge influx of Argentine fans crossing the border.

About 80,000 Argentine fans are likely to travel to Porto Alegre, which is about 600 km (375 miles) from the frontier with Argentina, a spokesman for the local organizers of the World Cup said on Tuesday.

The extra security measures included greater control of crowds reaching the perimeter fence at the Beira Rio stadium, similar to measures taken at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana stadium after security breaches there, the spokesman said.

About 200 Chile fans stormed into the Maracana last week before their team's match against Spain. A few days earlier, a handful of Argentine fans climbed over the perimeter fence at also at the Maracana ahead of Argentina v Bosnia.

To help cope with the large number of Argentine fans expected in Porto Alegre, a dedicated fan zone in the city, where supporters can watch matches on big screens, will be expanded.

James Rodriguez scored a stunning long-range volley to give Colombia a 1-0 lead over Uruguay at halftime of their second round game at the World Cup on Saturday.

With his back to goal, Rodriguez took the ball on his chest outside the area in the 28th minute and in one fluid motion turned around and fired a left-foot volley that went off the underside of the crossbar and into the net.

Rodriguez's fourth goal of the tournament puts Colombia 45 minutes away from reaching the quarterfinals for the first time. Colombia would play Brazil.

Missing banned striker Luis Suarez, Uruguay labored in attack with replacement Diego Forlan and Edinson Cavani struggling to create scoring chances.

Cavani's free kick in the 33rd went just over the bar in Uruguay's best chance.

A chaotic Germany was fortunate to hold an attacking Algeria to 0-0 Monday at halftime in the second round of the World Cup.

Slimani had a goal waved off when he was offside in the 17th. After a brief protest, Algeria was threatening again when Faouzi Ghoulam's shot skimmed across the goalmouth.

Germany produced little until a flurry of shots shortly before halftime.

Klose breaks Ronaldo's record to become top scorer in World Cup history

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2Fog1rJ1ifcbgjj_small.jpg&hash=9ef5fd6b6742fd6d9d2e5929e75344861df4b870)

Miroslav Klose has beaten Ronaldo's record to become the top scorer in World Cup history.

The German forward scored his side's second goal in the semi-final against Brazil to become the record holder outright with 16.

It was his second of the tournament after he came off the bench against Ghana to net in the group stage, which put him level with the Brazil legend.

Klose's first World Cup appearance came in 2002, where he scored a hat trick in an 8-0 victory over Saudi Arabia.

He netted again in their next group game, a 1-1 draw with Republic of Ireland, before scoring the second in a 2-0 victory over Cameroon.

Despite Germany's run to the final that year, Klose failed to find the net again in the tournament, eventually finishing level on goals with Rivaldo, and behind top scorer Ronaldo who grabbed eight.

During his home World Cup four years later in 2006, the forward found the net five times again, which was enough for the Golden Boot.

He scored two goals in their opening 4-2 victory over Costa Rica, and twice more in their final group game against Ecuador.

Klose's final goal in that World Cup was his vital 80th-minute equaliser against Argentina in the quarter-finals, that brought the score to 1-1, with Germany eventually winning on penalties.

And in 2010, he managed four more strikes: one in their opening 4-0 win over Australia, once in their 4-1 demolition of England in the last-16 and twice in their 4-0 destruction of Argentina in the quarter-finals.

Tearful Brazil captain David Luiz apologised to his compatriots after the hosts suffered a humiliating 7-1 World Cup semi-final defeat by Germany.

The five-times winners were thrashed by a German side who were 5-0 up in the first 29 minutes.

"They were better than us," said Luiz, who captained Brazil in the absence of Thiago Silva. "It's a very sad day but it's also a day from which to learn.

Germany were 5-0 up faster than any other team in World Cup history

Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar described his team's collapse as a "blackout" and the defeat as "inexplicable".

The 34-year-old former QPR number one said: "It was beautiful up to here.

"I thank the Brazilian people, and the fans are to be congratulated for all the support they gave us.

'Germany rout of Brazil totally crazy'

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2FohjdKOiaieedb_small.jpg&hash=343543038c7ceb1a55a1a3684c98ff08c08496d7)

Germany's Thomas Muller said his side's 7-1 Fifa World Cup semi-final thrashing of hosts Brazil was "totally crazy".

The Bayern Munich forward - who opened the scoring in the 11th minute - said he was in shock after his team reached the World Cup final in emphatic style.

"We can't run away with ourselves," Muller, 24, said. "Just as it was said that we were finished after the Algeria game, now we'll be praised to the heavens.

"We haven't reached our goal yet."

Muller called for his team-mates to put their "heart and soul" into one more game - the World Cup final on Sunday.

"Of course, we didn't expect that score," he said. "But you can see how different games can go.

"Brazil reacted differently and moved forward fast when they won the ball, which left more space than you get against defence-minded teams.

"We used that until the middle of the first half and, at some point, the opponent has to break."

Brazil press decry World Cup 'Shame of Shames'

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2FohjehHibefabj_small.jpg&hash=c5d720f290a0949004cd09984c06d5f4318a4b81)

Brazil's national media quickly dubbed the football team's 7-1 defeat to Germany the "Shame of Shames" and the most humiliating defeat in the squad's history.

Brazil's humiliating exit from the World Cup is as close as it gets to a national trauma in a football-mad nation whose identity is closely associated with its team.

The country of 200 million people had hoped to win the title at home and erase memories of its 1950 World Cup defeat to Uruguay in Rio de Janeiro, the notorious "Maracanazo" at the Maracana Stadium.

But instead Brazil suffered the worst defeat in its 100-year footballing history, falling 7-1 to Germany at the Mineirao Stadium in the southeastern city here -- now the infamous "Mineirazo."

Newspapers and TV commentators called the defeat the "Mineirazo," an allusion to the Mineirao Stadium in Belo Horizonte and Brazil's traumatic Word Cup defeat at home in 1950 known as the "Maracanazo."

But other analysts said the Mineirazo could not compare to the Maracanazo.

"In 1950 we felt we had an unbeatable team and losing at the Maracana was unthinkable," Michel Castellar, an analyst at the sports daily Lance, told AFP.

"This time, we knew that we had a team with a lot of flaws and that maybe they would not reach the final. Was it a national humiliation? Yes, because of the number of goals. But it wasn't a new Maracanazo," he said.

"It looked like a game between adults and children," wrote the prominent sports analyst Juca Kfouri on his blog. "Brazilian football has never experienced such humiliation."

The country's newspapers called it the biggest disgrace in the team's history, with globoesporte.Com dubbing it the "Shame of Shames."

The sport's daily Lance called last night's crushing loss "The Biggest Shame in History."

"The Maracanazo becomes nothing and literally a thing of the past," the newspaper said on its website.

The top of Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper's website was titled "Historic Shame" after Brazil suffered its worst defeat in the national team's 100-year history.

"Brazil is humiliated again trying to win the cup at home," the daily said.

The G1 news website quoted Brazilian manager Luiz Felipe Scolari saying "catastrophic result".

The worst day of my life: Scolari

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2FohjehHibefabj_small.jpg&hash=c5d720f290a0949004cd09984c06d5f4318a4b81)

Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari described Brazil's 7-1 World Cup semi-final loss to Germany as "the worst day" of his life, and said he took responsibility.

The hosts were 5-0 down by half-time in Belo Horizonte as Germany reached the final in emphatic style.

"I will be remembered as the coach to lose 7-1 but I knew that risk when I took the job," said Scolari, who guided Brazil to the 2002 World Cup trophy.

"The person who decided the line-up, the tactics, was me. It was my choice."

Scolari described the result, which surpassed the 3-0 defeat by France in the 1998 final as Brazil's heaviest World Cup loss, as "catastrophic".

"My message for the Brazilian people is please excuse us for this performance," added the former Chelsea manager.

"I'm sorry that we weren't able to get to the final and we're going to try to win the third-place match. We still have something to play for."

Brazil, the first team to concede seven goals in a World Cup semi-final, will play either Netherlands or Argentina in Brasilia on Saturday.

Scolari has suffered a notable defeat before, when his Portugal side were unexpectedly beaten on home soil by Greece in the final of Euro 2004.

Brazil were unbeaten in 14 games ahead of the meeting with Germany and Scolari played down the absence of striker Neymar, who fractured a vertebra during the quarter-final victory over Colombia.

He said: "Let's not try to find an excuse in Neymar."

Thomas Muller's opener was the first of five goals in 18 first-half minutes, with strikes from Miroslav Klose and Sami Khedira sandwiching a Toni Kroos double.

Klose, 36, became the record scorer in World Cup history by netting his 16th finals goal - beating the record of Brazil legend Ronaldo.

Substitute Andre Schurrle added two more after the break before Chelsea team-mate Oscar netted a late consolation.

Scolari, who also had captain Thiago Silva suspended for the match, said: "We did our best - but we came up against a great German team.

"We couldn't react to going behind. Not even the Germans can tell you how this happened - but it's because of their skills and you have to respect that."

Brazil's image shattered, says Maradona

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2FogwwSHeegigaj_small.jpg&hash=5168a24bfa6c074fc7f5085b946a649d6ad76378)

Germany's 7-1 thrashing of Brazil in the World Cup semi-final was a "hammer-blow" that has damaged the hosts' image around the world, Argentine great Diego Maradona said.

The astonishing reverse was Brazil's record World Cup defeat, their first loss at home in 64 competitive matches since 1975, and the first time they had lost by six goals in any match since Uruguay beat them 6-0 in the Copa America in 1920.

"I said Germany were better than Brazil, I didn't like Brazil from the start, but I didn't think Germany were going to be so imposing, so devastating, so decisive," the former World Cup winner said on a chat-show late on Tuesday.

"Brazil just didn't turn up and I think the worst thing for Brazil is that they gave an extremely poor image. OK, Germany were strong but the Brazil players simply weren't on the pitch."

Maradona knows what it is like to be humiliated by Germany: he managed Argentina at the World Cup four years ago where the Germans beat his team 4-0 in the quarter-finals.

That, he argued on the Venezuelan-based TV network Telesur, was different, because Argentina fought harder and let in three late goals rather than capitulate from the start.

"I'm sorry because Brazil was so proud of its team, they wanted to reach the final, but football gives you these hammer-blows," Maradona added.

Though respectful in his comments on air, some media reported that privately Maradona was mocking the Brazilians, who are Argentina's traditional rivals.

Those reports said that just before going on air, the always controversial Maradona had sung an Argentine fans' song, "Brazil, how does it feel?", but adapting the word "siente" which means feel in Spanish for "siete" which means seven.

On the program, he criticized how Brazil's midfield and defense seemed to melt away at every German attack in the game on Tuesday night at Belo Horizonte's Mineirao stadium

"LIKE FIVE-A-SIDE"

"Brazil didn't stop anything in the midfield, anyone could get through. The defenders, Dante and David Luiz, had no coordination," Maradona said. Dante stood in for suspended captain Thiago Silva while striker Neymar was out inured.

"It was like five-a-side. You give it to me, I give it you, and you shoot," Maradona added of the ease with which Germany's strikers stroked the ball around in the buildup to the goals.

Had Germany converted a great chance, just prior to Brazil's consolation goal, and gone 8-0 up, it would have been a "global catastrophe," Maradona said.

The team suffered from not being in the South American qualifiers with the experience that would have given, he said.

Brazil qualified for the tournament automatically as hosts.

Echoing the amazement of those at the game, and millions watching around the world, the Argentine said it felt as if he had fallen asleep and dreamt about Brazil's defeat.

The atmosphere inside the Mineirao stadium was surreal, as hours of euphoric buildup turned to shock and trauma when Germany went 5-0 up in the first half.

Adults and children cried alike, some fans began booing their team and ironically cheering the Germans, and there was venomous treatment for some players especially forward Fred.

The Brazilians looked lost and startled, while the Germans seemed almost embarrassed by what was happening, restraining their celebrations and consoling their rivals afterwards.

Praising Germany's goalkeeper Manuel Neuer as a "monster", Maradona said the Europeans nevertheless have weaknesses. "This Germany is vulnerable," said Maradona, whose nation play the Netherlands later on Wednesday in the other semi-final.

osts Brazil lost 3-0 to the Netherlands in their final World Cup match on Saturday and their players apologized to fans after another hugely disappointing performance in the third-place match.

"I don't think we deserved for it to end like this," captain Thiago Silva said in a televised interview.

"We need to apologize to the fans, they booed us at the end, which is normal, they have feelings too. It's very tough."

Midfielder Oscar looked totally deflated after the defeat, which came just four days after Brazil were crushed 7-1 by Germany in the semi-finals.

"What can you say. We came here hoping to win third place but we didn't, it wasn't our day,??? Oscar said. ???We lost, there???s nothing to say.

"We lost a goal in two, three minutes and we were chasing the game.

"We are all very sad, the people are very sad, but we tried and we tried till the end."

Robin van Persie got the first Dutch goal from the penalty spot in the third minute, Daley Blind added a second just 13 minutes later and Georginio Wijnaldum rounded it off with a third in stoppage time.

WC final: Argentina vs Germany

And Germany are WORLD CUP champions!

Mario Gotze scores in the 113th minute to put Germany on the doorstep of becoming World Champions.

It is still goalless after 90 minutes. Match goes into extratime.

At halftime, it is 0-0.
Argentina forward Gonzalo Higuain missed a perfect chance to give his team the lead over Germany in Sunday's World Cup final, shooting wide to leave the score at 0-0 after 30 minutes.

Higuain intercepted an errant pass headed back toward goal by Germany midfielder Toni Kroos in the 21st minute, but his shot went wide.

Higuain also had a chance in the fourth minute but shot wide, and found the net in the 30th minute but was ruled offside.

The Argentines, with Lionel Messi leading the attack, made several dangerous moves forward early in the game, while Germany defended well enough.

The match at the Maracana Stadium kicked off with Germany wearing its traditional white shirts and Argentina playing in dark blue.

With Messi in the starting lineup, Argentina has one of the best players in history on the field. The four-time world player of the year has had a stellar World Cup so far, and a win on Sunday will give him the one major title he is missing.

For Germany, a team led by Philipp Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger is trying to finally win a major trophy after a nearly 20-year wait. But they'll have to do it without Sami Khedira, the Real Madrid midfielder who was ruled out of the final only minutes before kickoff and was replaced by Christoph Kramer.

The Germans, whose last major title came at the 1996 European Championship, reached the World Cup final in 2002 and the semifinals in 2006. They also reached the final at Euro 2008 and the semifinals at Euro 2012.

Historically, however, Germany has been a consistent winner. The national team is trying to win its fourth World Cup, but the first for a united country. West Germany won in 1954, 1974 and 1990, while a united Germany lost in the 2002 final to Brazil.

Argentina is a two-time champion, winning titles in 1978 and 1986.

The last World Cup title for each team came against the other. The Argentines, led by Diego Maradona, beat West Germany in Mexico in the 1986 final, while the Germans leveled the series by winning four years later in Italy.

Sunday's match is something of a tiebreaker, and it comes at one of the most iconic football venues in the world.

Shakira, Santana and Samba light up WC closing ceremony

The mournful cries of millions of Brazilians were drowned out in the high-decibel musical gala during the FIFA World Cup's closing ceremony, which was graced by crowd pullers such as Shakira, guitar king Carlos Santana and also had a dash of samba here today.

FIFA lined up six events that followed a series of lavish opening acts before the grand finale between Argentina and Germany at the iconic Maracana.

The events attempted to combine the cultural distinction of host nation Brazil with a nod to every country involved in the sporting extravaganza.

Colombian star Shakira, Mexican guitarist Santana, Brazilian Grammy award singer Ivete Sangalo and a samba school led the musical entertainment.

Around 1,000 people were involved to celebrate the greatest values of the planet's most popular sport as the tournament closed in on its climax.

The 18-minute show inside the stadium was designed to pay tribute to the beautiful game and its 'key symbols'.

Kicking off with an expression of the sport's values through four characters Freedom, Solidarity, Passion and Diversity the ceremony subsequently included representations of all 32 teams to have participated at this World Cup, with particular focus on the two finalists: Joachim Low's Germany and Alejandro Sabella's Argentina.

Set to a soundtrack of samba music, incorporating a cast of 400 people and featuring GRES Academicos do Grande Rio, a special reference to the World Cup trophy took centrestage, while a unique tribute to the game symbolically brought together the two sides battling to be crowned winners of football world.

Shakira captivated the audience with her trademark 'la la la' song.

The ceremony concluded with a spectacular combination of music: Shakira and Carlinhos Brown performing 'Dare'; Alexandre Pires, Santana and Wyclef Jean providing a rendition of the World Cup official anthem - 'We Will Find A Way'.

Last but not the least, a medley of Brazilian songs was performed by Pires and Sangalo.

Messi vomits in World Cup final

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2Fohod6qedidice_small.jpg&hash=bac564f057a6ba403090672819512d243dafbfc8)

Argentina captain Lionel Messi vomited during the World Cup final, as he has done on many occasions both for Argentina and club team Barcelona.

It was during the first half against Germany that Messi doubled over and vomited on the pitch.

Despite several medical tests, Argentina and Barcelona team doctors haven't been able to find the cause of Messi's problem.

The striker has played it down, saying it's just something that happens to him in training, during matches and even when he's at home.

It doesn't appear to affect his performance, though. Messi has gone on to score in several matches after throwing up on the pitch.

Messi wins Golden Ball at 2014 World Cup

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2Fohod6qedidice_small.jpg&hash=bac564f057a6ba403090672819512d243dafbfc8)

Lionel Messi has been chosen as the Golden Ball winner for the 2014 World Cup. The award is handed out to the player voted as the tournament's best, however, it came after a losing effort against Germany in the final:

The Barcelona ace finished on the losing side in Sunday's tournament decider in Rio de Janeiro but was nonetheless recognised for his individual excellence in Brazil.

The Barcelona attacker was on the losing side in Sunday's tournament decider, with the Albiceleste going down 1-0 to Germany after extra-time in Rio de Janeiro.

However, Messi has been rewarded for carrying his side to the final, with the 27-year-old having racked up four goals and one assist in seven appearances.

In claiming the prestigious prize, Messi emulates the achievement of the man with whom he is so often compared, compatriot Diego Maradona, who skippered the Albiceleste to success in Mexico in 1986.

Messi is the third Argentine to receive the Golden Ball, with Mario Kempes having become the inaugural winner in 1978 on the back of his sensational goalscoring exploits during the country's victorious campaign on home soil.

Meanwhile, Germany's sweeper-keeper Manuel Neuer beat off competition from fellow finalist Sergio Romero, of Argentina, and Costa Rica shot-stopper Keylor Navas for the Golden Glove.

Team spirit behind World Cup win, says Germany's Neuer

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2FohodRsedicaai_small.jpg&hash=dfcb0a738376fd5bb07b280fc3409cdb7d1d8afc)

Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer hailed his side's remarkable team spirit after their 1-0 World Cup final win over Argentina at the Maracana on Sunday.

Neuer, who was named goalkeeper of the tournament following the extra-time victory, paid tribute to the squad and coaching staff, as well as the players who were unable to travel to Brazil due to injury.

"It’s unbelievable," he told German television. "All of Germany is world champions now.

"All those who didn’t play brought such togetherness into the team, that’s why we won the World Cup."

Substitute Mario Goetze volleyed home with just seven minutes of extra time remaining to clinch Germany's fourth World Cup and the first by a European side on South American soil.

The game had looked to be heading for a penalty shootout until fellow substitute Andre Schuerrle escaped down the left and sent in a cross that Goetze controlled on his chest before slamming past Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

Neuer's role in Germany's triumph extended far beyond his superb shot-stopping abilities as his perfectly timed dashes out of the area to cut off opposition breaks instilled confidence in his back four and helped launch fast counter-attacks.

Several times he put himself on collision course with opposition strikers but he never backed out of a challenge.

"It’s not about me and whether or not I risk my neck for the team," he added. "The team did a super job, everything was great, the team behind the team.

"We’re going to celebrate for at least five weeks now. At some point we’ll stop celebrating but we’ll always keep waking up with a smile."

Germany wins terrifically entertaining World Cup

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2Fohoiq1fihafhe_small.jpg&hash=685bf5330de949464889a8f4c2666cc8a7d45774)

Germany won the World Cup. Host Brazil won a world of new friends.

The now four-time champions, the first European team to win the World Cup on Latin American soil, earned the honor of lifting the most recognized trophy in sports with a tooth-and-nail 1-0 victory in a final as terrifically entertaining as the tournament itself.

Team spirit behind World Cup win: Germany's Neuer

For a 32-day showcase of football at its best, the winning goal was beautifully appropriate. Mario Goetze controlled the ball with his chest and then volleyed it into the Argentine goal, making difficult skills look so simple. Scored in the 113th minute, the mortal blow left Argentina too little time to recover.

Messi wins Golden Ball at 2014 World Cup

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, sitting in the VIP section, waved a clenched fist as Goetze celebrated. When referee Nicola Rizzoli blew the final whistle a few minutes later, Vladimir Putin reached across and shook Merkel's hand. The Russian president's country hosts the next World Cup in 2018.

Another delighted German in the crowd was International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, who'll be keeping a close eye on Brazil's next big organizational challenge: readying Rio de Janeiro for the Summer Games in 2016.

Sepp Blatter, president of World Cup organizer FIFA, and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff embraced as Germany's players went crazy with joy and Argentina's wept.

One of the ironies of this World Cup is that even though the tournament will be remembered as a resounding success, it was a headache for Rousseff and Blatter to the end.

As they handed over the 18-carat gold trophy to Germany captain Philipp Lahm, the Maracana Stadium echoed with an insulting chant aimed at the Brazilian president. There were resounding boos, too, when she was shown shaking the hand of losing coach Alejandro Sabella. Such protests were also heard at other stadiums during the tournament, demonstrating how the party atmosphere was a thin veneer for grave public misgivings about $13 billion of spending on cup preparations.

As sunset-pink clouds made way for night, and the teams treated the watching world to 30 minutes of extra time because they were still scoreless after 90 minutes, the iconic Maracana bathed in light looked like a spaceship landed between the hills, high-rises and favelas of Rio.

The 74,738 fans had a ball, especially Germans and Brazilians who didn't want Argentina, their neighbor and fiercest football rival, to win a third world title.

They drowned out the Argentine fans' tireless, jaunty singing with piercing whistles and shouted "Ole!" when Germany players' had the ball, weaving their game of intricate passing. Fireworks ripped the skies to celebrate Germany's first World Cup title as a unified nation, having won as West Germany in 1954, 1974 and 1990.

In once-divided Berlin, a monster crowd said by authorities to be a quarter-million strong crammed in front of giant TV screens near the German capital's famous Brandenburg Gate.

"At some point we'll stop celebrating but we'll still wake up with a smile," said Germany's Manuel Neuer, voted the tournament's best goalkeeper.

The biggest game in football attracted a good sprinkling of celebrities. David Beckham hugged Pele. Supermodel Gisele Bundchen snuggled with her husband, NFL star Tom Brady. Rolling Stones front-man Mick Jagger was there, too.

Even with tiring legs as they played into extra time, the two exquisitely matched teams gave and sought no quarter.

Germany brought brawn, its accurate passing and quick movement and tireless determination to attack and attack again. Argentina responded with bruising defense and craftiness and could have won had its players not wasted chances.

The inability of Lionel Messi, Argentina's four-time world player of the year, to stave off this defeat will renew debate about where he fits in football pantheons of greats.

Messi looked flabbergasted when he shot wide of Neuer's goal early in the second half, wasting a chance that had it gone in would have strengthened arguments that he is equal to Diego Maradona, who led Argentina to its last win in 1986.

For the highest stakes in football, players bruised body and soul. German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger was carrying a cut under his right eye as he walked up with his teammates to collect the trophy.

Midfielder Christoph Kramer played on for 14 minutes with a suspected concussion before he was replaced by Andre Schuerrle. It was Schuerrle who provided the cross that Goetze controlled so magically. Kramer's head injury was the last in a series at this World Cup that will put pressure on football to better protect players from concussion.

Tens of thousands of Argentines descended on Rio, camping out and driving in convoys to be in the party city for the final, their blue and white jerseys mirroring the colors of the puffy-cloud skies when the game kicked off, watched by hundreds of millions around the globe.

In Buenos Aires, fans climbed lamp posts to peer over a crowd of 20,000 people living the drama on a giant screen. Argentines too young to remember their nation's last victory in 1986 were devastated that they must again put their hopes on hold. And at the next World Cup, Messi won't be in his prime as he is now.

"I feel an enormous sadness," said 19-year-old Soledad Canelas, carrying a blue-and-white Argentine flag.

For many Brazilians, Argentina losing was the best possible outcome — other than Brazil winning itself. Many Brazilians transferred their loyalties to Germany even after it crushed their team 7-1 in the semifinals.

Although Brazil fared less well than expected on the pitch, it performed far better than many expected off it.

The tournament spread across 12 cities in South America's largest country passed without logistical disasters for the 32 teams and hundreds of thousands of traveling fans.

There also was no repeat of giant public protests that unsettled last year's warm-up tournament, the Confederations Cup. Heavy police security around venues dissuaded dissent.

But broken promises of new subway lines and other life-improving infrastructure to accompany the 12 all-new or renovated stadiums reflected poorly on Brazil's bureaucracy, as did accusations that corrupt public servants skimmed off funds. An unfinished overpass collapsed, killing two people, in the host city of Belo Horizonte.

And the largely white and seemingly well-off stadium crowds reflected Brazil's stark economic inequalities. This was a World Cup that Brazil's black and mixed-race poorer citizens mostly saw from afar on television.

Germans revel in first World Cup win in 24 years

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2Fohod4Kghccfdi_small.jpg&hash=8eef92b363e1a5ef2e007ef8623e9913c5436a41)

Jubilant Germans celebrated in the streets on Sunday night, lighting fireworks, embracing strangers, honking car horns and reveling in their first World Cup win in 24 years.

Roars of delight soared from Berlin's massive fan zone, stretching 1.3 kilometers from the Brandenburg Gate, where 300,000 fans had braved torrential downpours and thunder storms to endure an agonizing 113 goalless minutes before a Mario Goetze volley gave Germany a fourth World Cup crown.

"This is such an awesome feeling. I'm overwhelmed. The team kept us waiting for that goal, but we won in the end and that's what matters," said 23-year-old Marcus Angrick from Bernau, outside Berlin.

"This team is so good, we won't have to wait another 24 years to win again."

Thousands of fans streamed down West Berlin's famous Kurfuerstendamm, waving flags and umbrellas after watching Germany become the first European team to lift the World Cup on South American soil.

On neighboring streets, cars revved loudly and honked horns, while girls in wigs with Germany colors and flags hung out of windows and rode on car roofs.

Others climbed lamp posts, toasting Germany's victory with beers and chanting, "Germany, Champions, Hallelujah!"

"1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014 -- we fought hard for our fourth win and it was totally deserved. Congratulations," tweeted Angela Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert, referring to Germany's four World Cup titles. He had traveled with the chancellor to Rio de Janeiro for the final.

'TREMBLING AND SHAKING'

Crowds whooped with delight as they watched Merkel, nicknamed "Mutti" or 'mummy' in Germany, embrace each German player after the match.

"Yes, yes yes!!! Jogi you did it!! Huge compliment to Argentina but the best team won the 2014 World Cup!" tweeted U.S. coach Juergen Klinsmann.

Klinsmann was Germany's manager during the 2006 World Cup, when current manager Joachim Loew, affectionately known as 'Jogi' in Germany, was his assistant.

"I'm really delighted," said 49-year-old Berlin nurse Simone Sieg, grinning because her name means 'victory' in Germany.

"I remember the last time Germany won the World Cup in 1990. I was watching at home in East Berlin. Germany hadn't even been reunited then.

"So much has changed about how we celebrate - it is wonderful."

Soccer and the success of the national team since the World Cup Germany hosted in 2006, is credited with allowing Germans to take pride in their nation and wave flags and paint their faces with unprecedented ease.

Previously Germans had been highly uncomfortable at any display of nationalism because of the country's history.

"It was an anxious game. I was trembling and shaking," German President Joachim Gauck, who had also traveled to Rio, told German television.

"But now I'm thrilled," he added.

Germany's triumph was 10 years in the making: Loew

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2Fohoiq1fihafhe_small.jpg&hash=685bf5330de949464889a8f4c2666cc8a7d45774)

Germany's World Cup victory on Sunday was not just down to 50 days of good preparation for the tournament but was the culmination of a meticulously-planned long-term project, coach Joachim Loew said.

Loew, who took over from Juergen Klinsmann in 2006 after their third-place finish at the World Cup in Germany, said were it not for the team's first-round exits in earlier tournaments their fourth World Cup win may have been delayed.

"I think that we were 50 days together but this is a project we started 10 years ago," the 54-year-old said after his team Argentina 1-0 in the final.

"We started it with Juergen Klinsmann (after 2004) and then we continued it. Our biggest strength is that we improved throughout the years even if we missed taking that last step at tournaments."

Germany made at least the semi-finals in the last two World Cups and European Championships after failing to get past the group stage at Euro 2000 and 2004.

"We knew we would take that last step and we believed in it and today it finally worked," he said.

Those setbacks led to the creation of a national plan to invest in youth centers for the sport with many players in Loew's current team, including 22-year-old Mario Goetze who scored the extra-time winner against Argentina.

"We were disappointed at times in the past but today there was only deserved winner. This team. It is a special moment because it was not just these days here but the entire 10 years," he said.

Loew said during that time German players had to learn not to rely only on what he said were the traditional German virtues of working hard and battling until the very end.

Young players had to learn more skills to be able to compete with foreign clubs and national teams.

"The Bundesliga has a big part in this with its training centers," he said.

"In 2000 and 2004, German football was at the very bottom. But we took action to invest in training, to become technically better.

"The German virtues were not enough any more and we had to improve our skills."

The first signs were visible at the 2010 World Cup when Loew fielded their youngest team in 76 years and their attractive attacking style won over many fans.

"The clubs also have their share in this because they got younger and younger players into the first teams. They are doing great work and I have to thank them for that," he said.

Argentina 'lacked efficiency' in front of goal

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2Fohnh6Seehdbfg.jpg&hash=588b7fcc5baab0679fb4dec15f9932f9f45d98d1)

Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella heaped praise on his team after Sunday's 1-0 World Cup final defeat by Germany on Sunday, saying they gave their all but lacked cutting edge in front of goal during an even game.

"They played a fantastic World Cup. There's nothing to blame them for," a drained-looking Sabella said at a news conference after Mario Goetze's extra time volley sunk his team.

"Today we had our chances but we just lacked efficiency. In general terms, though, I am very proud. Beyond the pain of defeat they can look each other in the eye, and look in the mirror, and know they gave their all for Argentina."

Striker Gonzalo Higuain missed Argentina's best chance when a careless header towards his own goal by Germany's Tony Kroos put him put him clear with only Manuel Neuer to beat, but he dragged his shot wide.

Messi saw plenty of the ball but got few breakthroughs, only escaping his markers once but angling a shot wide.

"This was a very even match. They (Germany) are a great team. The match had its ups and downs. Germany had greater command of play and possession. Our games are very similar and when there are chances, you have to convert," Sabella said.

"Then in these big games, if you make a mistake and let a goal in, it's very difficult to come back. But the only thing I can do is congratulate my players, they did an extraordinary job, and congratulate Germany for the title."

Sabella, whose agent has said he would stand down after the World Cup final, declined to discuss his future.

"The future for me in this moment is to be with the players, to be with the coaching staff, to be with my family, to rest a bit. About the future, I can???t really say anything," he said.

PRAISE FOR MESSI

Asked if Messi had missed a chance to join the world's greats by not winning the World Cup, Sabella said the Argentina captain and Barcelona forward had already answered that debate.

"I think Lionel reached the pantheon of the greats a while back," he said, adding that Messi fully deserved his "Golden Ball" award for best player. "He played a great World Cup to get us where he did. I think it's very deserved."

The coach described the mood among his charges in Argentina's dressing room as somber.

"It is the silence of the warrior because they were warriors. They left their skin out there, their last drop of sweat on the pitch," he said.

"The players are very bitter. We had a great dream. We wanted to win the final. To be perfect, we had to be more efficient. I'm sad like the players. On the one hand, it's a normal pain to have not won. But on the other, I'm satisfied because the group gave their all, they're a marvelous group."

Argentina should be praised and remembered for reaching their first final since 1990, he said.

"I leave with a double feeling ??? the frustration of not achieving the dream, but also the satisfaction of having fulfilled our duty to give 100 percent."

Midfielder Javier Mascherano summed up the players' disappointment.

"We gave what we could and we are sorry for the people who came and for the people in Argentina," he said.

"Unfortunately the pain is going to be for life because this was our opportunity. That's what we felt. Football is like that. We'll have to lift our heads to try and bear the pain."

Goetze is Germany's wonder boy, says coach Loew

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2FohodGmhgchdgh_small.jpg&hash=f99a0598470cb8ba80d1e04e9b0a406d8822ff02)

Germany forward Mario Goetze, who plundered the extra-time winner in the World Cup final against Argentina, is a wonder boy with immense qualities, coach Joachim Loew said on Sunday.

Substitute Goetze, who until the final had had a disappointing tournament, struck the only goal seven minutes before the end of extra time to clinch Germany's fourth World Cup.

"I told him 'you go out there and show the world that you are better than (Argentina captain) Lionel Messi and that you can decide the game tonight'," Loew told reporters.

Four-times world player of the year Messi was looking for a first World Cup victory that would place him among the world's greatest players.

But Goetze stole the show.

"That's what I told him and I had a good feeling," said Loew, who brought on the attacking midfielder two minutes before the end of normal time for striker Miroslav Klose.

The 22-year-old paid back his coach's trust, volleying in his second goal of the tournament after spending the past few games on the bench.

"Goetze is a wonder boy who has these immense abilities, this outstanding skill," Loew said. "He can always decide a game and he scored a great goal today."

For man-of-the-match Goetze, it had not been an easy tournament after initially failing to live up to expectations.

One of Germany's most talented and promising players, he scored in the group game against Ghana but then was not used much.

"It was not an easy year, not an easy tournament for me," said the softly-spoken Goetze.

"But I am just happy that the team won this title with me. I kept training with the team and every player here deserves it," said Goetze.

Scolari fired as Brazil manager, newspaper reports

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2Fohdupvcggdaij.jpg&hash=120a1e22d115483a8f0b92b2c063ef658d9f562b)

Brazil have sacked manager Luiz Felipe Scolari just hours after the end of a home World Cup in which they suffered two of their worst defeats in the tournament's history, one of Brazil's leading newspapers reported on Monday.

Scolari's Brazil were favorites to win the tournament but were demolished 7-1 in a semi-final defeat by eventual champions Germany. To compound their misery, they then lost the third-place playoff 3-0 against the Netherlands.

Scolari, who led Brazil to the last of their record five World Cups in 2002, said after the game he would make a report to his bosses at the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and only then would his fate be decided.

But O Globo reported Scolari was fired late Sunday night. The paper said an official announcement would be made on Monday.

There was no confirmation from the CBF.

Scolari took over the post in November 2012 and lost just five of his 29 games in charge.

If his departure is confirmed, early front runners to replace him would be Tite, the man who led Corinthians to the Libertadores Cup and Club World Cup in 2012, and Muricy Ramalho, the current boss of Sao Paulo.

However, there will also be calls to hire a foreign manager for the first time in Brazil's history.

The CBF have always resisted that idea, with reports that Pep Guardiola was rejected before he joined Bayern Munich.

World Cup was biggest social media event ever: Facebook

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2Fohlxatdgeaacb.jpg&hash=589035f342c22003cba930ad8f5966e80fa4f023)

Brazil's World Cup was the biggest social media event on record involving 350 million Facebook Inc users worldwide, the company claimed on Monday, as it made strides into the so-called "real-time" market dominated by Twitter.

People increasingly are using social networking to comment on global events seen on television, like the month-long soccer tournament won by Germany on Sunday.

Figures obtained by Reuters showed that the 350 million users generated a record Facebook "conversation" with 3 billion posts, comments and likes.

"We knew the World Cup was going to be big, but this level of engagement is remarkable," Nick Grudin, Facebook's director of global media partnerships, told Reuters.

"It was the highest level of conversation around a single event that we have ever measured."

Audience is crucial for companies like Facebook, which make money by selling ads to advertisers interested in reaching its 1.28 billion monthly active users.

Facebook's record traffic around the World Cup suggested the Menlo Park, California, company was increasingly used as a platform to discuss events in real time, a segment pioneered by microblogging website Twitter Inc.

The widespread use of mobile phones that have made social media seemingly ubiquitous helped explain Facebook's record numbers.

Germany's 1-0 win over Argentina in the World Cup final on Sunday was the most commented match of the tournament, with 88 million users and 280 million interactions, the company said.

Brazil's star Neymar led the ranking of most talked about player, followed by Argentina's Lionel Messi, Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo and Uruguay's Luis Suárez.

And with 26 percent of all World Cup interactions, Brazil was the strongest voice in Facebook's biggest conversation ever. The United States accounted for 10 percent of the posts, comments and likes; Indonesia 6 percent; Mexico 5 percent and Argentina 4 percent.

"Facebook was the global stadium for the 2014 World Cup," said Facebook's Grudin.

Messi didn't deserve Golden Ball award: Maradona

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2FohodN5iccdagd_small.jpg&hash=ce9dd14fcb17e1d2ae1b1c353fb76a7b0dfb2384)

Diego Maradona has declared that Lionel Messi did not deserve to be chosen as the best player of the 2014 World Cup, suggesting the Argentina forward won the award for marketing reasons.

A dejected Messi picked up Fifa’s Golden Ball for outstanding player of the tournament moments after Germany forward Mario Götze’s extra-time winner condemned Argentina to defeat in the World Cup final.

Messi had scored four goals in the group stages but failed to maintain his level of performance in the knock-out rounds, particularly against Germany and against the Netherlands in the semi-final, which Argentina won on penalties.

“I would give heaven and earth to Leo, but when marketing people want him to win something he didn’t (deserve to) win, it is unfair,” said Maradona, the winner of the Golden Ball when Argentina won the World Cup in 1986.
“I could see that he didn’t want to go up and collect it (the award).”

Barcelona star Messi is a prominent ambassador for sportswear manufacturer Adidas, also an official Fifa partner.

Speaking on the final edition of his World Cup television programme De Zurda, Maradona said Colombia’s James Rodriguez, who won the Golden Boot as the top scorer in the tournament, was his choice for the Golden Ball.
Germany have now beaten Argentina in each of the last three World Cups, thrashing a side coached by Maradona 4-0 in 2010.

But on this occasion, the former Argentina captain said there was little to choose between the two teams.
“We raised our flag high, there’s no doubt about that,” he said.

“Germany won due to a misunderstanding in the defence but at no point were they better than us. They showed us a lot of respect, and our lads earned that out on the pitch.”

Germany’s 12th Man at the World Cup: Big Data

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fsi.wsj.net%2Fpublic%2Fresources%2Fimages%2FBN-DQ523_0710_f_F_20140710180850.jpg&hash=a28e36c6bff892e7e9a6fa9acec3ad2073871b25)
Germany’s national team uses SAP 's Match Insight tool to help players make adjustments to position, ball handing and speed.

As Germany prepares for Sunday’s World Cup final against Argentina, it will have Big Data on its side.

To gain a competitive edge, the team partnered with German software giant SAP AG to create a custom match analysis tool that collects and analyzes massive amounts of player performance data.

The tool, called Match Insights, analyzes video data from on-field cameras capable of capturing thousands of data points per second, including player position and speed. That data then goes into an SAP database that runs analytics and allows coaches to target performance metrics for specific players and give them feedback via their mobile devices.

A focus for the German team this year was speed, said Nicolas Jungkind, SAP’s head of soccer sponsorships. Using Match Insights, the team was able to analyze stats about average possession time and cut it down from 3.4 seconds to about 1.1 seconds, he said. The tool allowed them to identify and visualize the change and show it to coaches, players and scouts. “That then goes into the game philosophy of the German team. What is apparent is the aggressive style Germany plays.”

That style of play was evident Tuesday in Germany’s 7-1 victory over Brazil, which included three goals scored in a span of 179 seconds. “Despite possessing the ball for 52% of Tuesday’s game, Brazil created barely a handful of chances,” the Journal’s Jonathan Clegg wrote. “In contrast, Germany passed the ball at full speed to create holes in the defense and clinically took advantage.”

The tool also allows coaches to determine performance indicators for individual players, which they can then send to teammates’ mobile devices. If a coach wanted to adjust Thomas Mueller’s speed, position or possession time, for example, he could send those stats and a video clip from that day’s game to Mueller’s cellphone. Players can also take a look at their performance data at a setup in the players’ lounge.

The tool is giving the German coaches in Brazil the ability “to crawl through complex video and make it simple for them to know what they need to win,” said Chris Burton, SAP’s group vice president for global sponsorships.

When it comes to positioning on the field, Match Insights can show the team virtual “defensive shadows” that show how much area a player can protect with his own body, Mr. Jungkind said. That can help them visualize and exploit weak links in an opponent’s setup.

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fonline.wsj.com%2Fmedia%2F0710_cio_fifa3_E_20140710181814.jpg&hash=cb43c1af26b16078e3ab97006334f0d208b7bc63)
SAP’s Match Insight can help players better understand and tweak their ball handling skills.

Soccer is among the growing list of sports being transformed by Big Data (Moneyball is probably an outdated reference at this point). The use of data and statistics to gain a competitive advantage has grown across a wide range of sports including basketball, tennis, and even, just a little bit, Ultimate Frisbee.

When not watching their own tapes during the World Cup, the German team was studying up on the performance of its competitors. “We also have a lot of qualitative data for the opposition available,” German team general manager Oliver Bierhoff said in an interview with ESPN this week. “Jérôme Boateng asked to look at the way Cristiano Ronaldo moves in the box, to use another example. And before the game against France, we saw that the French were very concentrated in the middle but left spaces on the flanks because their full-backs didn’t push up properly. So we targeted those areas.”

Before it walloped Brazil earlier this week, the German team had spent years working with university students to gather intel on the home team, Reuters reports. Working with sports students at a university in Cologne, they reviewed an extensive dataset that included how Brazil’s players reacted in pressure situations, their preferred routes and how they responded when fouled.

The Match Insights tool is exclusive to the German team right now, but SAP has plans to sell it more broadly in the future. “We are all about supporting our home team right now,” said Mr. Burton. “After this we’ll want to maximize what we think is a credible tool for sport.” There’s no public timeline, he said, but the tool “will become a product I’m sure in Q4.”

Blatter says 2014 World Cup was '9.25 out of 10'

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2FohofJihcabjja.jpg&hash=162ec74a66faeabe44d4ecfce6359768540fba23)

The 2014 World Cup in Brazil was a '9.25 out of 10', FIFA President Sepp Blatter has said.

Germany bagged their fourth World Cup trophy on Sunday after defeating Argentina by 1-0 to end a tournament that featured a record of 171 goals and was reportedly described by some as the best ever.

Blatter said that they were calculating using all the computers and Facebooks, and then out of 10 they came 9.25, and the FIFA president marked the 2010 World Cup in South Africa as nine out of 10, The BBC reported.

The 78-year-old said that Brazil has improved since South Africa after the 20th World Cup concluded on July 13.

Despite pre-tournament fears surrounding security, transport and stadiums proving largely unfounded, the World Cup was successful as it saw a 5-1 thrashing of holders Spain by Netherlands and Germany humiliating the hosts Brazil 7-1 in the semifinals.

The tournament saw underdogs Costa Rica, Algeria and Columbia all impressing in the knockout stages and it also saw a controversy with Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez being banned for four months after biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini.

The next World Cup would be hosted by Russia in four years' time, the report added. (ANI)

Blatter surprised with Messi winning Golden Ball award in WC

FIFA President Sepp Blatter has said that Argentina's Lionel Messi being named the World Cup's best player left him a little bit surprised.

Blatter is of the opinion that Messi, who was awarded the Golden Ball after Argentina's 1-0 loss to Germany in the World Cup final, was given the award on the strength of his four goals during the group stage.

Even Argentina legend Diego Maradona felt that Messi had been a surprise choice and claimed that Colombia's James Rodriguez had performed better in Brazil, The BBC reported.

Maradona, who was named the best player when Argentina won the World Cup in 1986, said that the marketing people had chosen the wrong man and called the decision unfair.

Meanwhile, Messi said that he does not care about the prize right now, adding that he wanted to take Argentina to the World Cup for all the people.

FIFA's Technical Study Group, a 13-strong committee that analyses matches at international tournaments, decides The Golden Ball and other individual prizes, such as the Golden Glove award for the best goalkeeper, the report added. (ANI)

Germany printed World Cup victory stamps before final

(https://friendstamilchat.in/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.sify.com%2Fcms%2Fimage%2Fohpr8Whefdbgi_small.jpg&hash=4a17203c40975785bb300ddcbf2e57e0a2476bd9)

Germany will this week issue a World Cup victory postage stamp, five million of which were printed before the final was even held, officials said.

“This year I dared to hope very early on that our team would take the title,” said Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble yesterday.

“It’s wonderful that the team turned this dream into a reality. I hope that this stamp will remind many citizens of the immense joy the team has given us.”

The 60-cent stamp, marked “Germany Football World Champion 2014”, will go on sale on Thursday after the first commemorative copies are presented to the coach, players and team staff.

Graphic designer Lutz Menze told DPA that the image shows footballers running, but not their faces in order to honour the whole team, not an individual.

Menze said that producing a stamp usually takes six months, but that he was only contacted by the government after the tournament had already started.

At a press conference on Monday, a journalist asked a finance ministry spokeswoman what would have happened to the print run if Germany had lost.

The ministry spokeswoman replied simply: “We always firmly believed the German team would win.”

She said she did not know how much had been paid to print the stamps but the news conference moderator noted that had the Germans lost, “their value probably would have gone through the roof”.
